Mayor's Message for December 10th, 2021

Starlight Parade Float

Temperatures are finally dropping and we are moving indoors.  We are in full holiday decorating mode (so fun!). Do be careful and safeguard yourself and your pets from unwanted incidents involving all the extra distractions, the electric lights, the tree, the wrapping, the plants and the food (See Holiday Safety tips flier below).

The Starlight Parade was a blast. Take a look at our 50th Anniversary Float (thank you again Lynn and Michael for building and decorating it). Kudos to Corrales MainStreet for putting the event together. And of course, thanks for all those terrific homemade cookies baked by community members. As you go by on Corrales Road, please enjoy the tree decorated by the Village (just south of the Post Office).

COVID numbers remain high. Still, we have lives to lead, so how do we protect ourselves? 1) Be fully vaccinated, 2) Wear a mask and 3) Be situationally aware. One more tool to help you feel safer: NM Notify. Just load the free app on your phone through the Apple Store or Google Play, and Bluetooth technology will allow NMDOH to anonymously notify you if you have been exposed to other individuals who have tested positive for COVID 19. It’s easy and reassuring. You can read more about it at nmnotify.com

The Village is getting great feedback on the glass recycling pilot project and Chief Martinez has created better signage so you will know exactly where to place your glass. The dumpster is located on the north fence between the Courthouse and the Planning and Zoning building in the Administration Complex parking lot at 4324 Corrales Road.

There’s still time to donate food, money or arrange to get a gift for a child. Contact Commander Tanya Lattin at (505) 702-4182.

Corrales police will be participating in 27th Annual Cops for Kids Christmas program this Sunday, December 12th.  Donations can be made to the program at crimestoppersnm.com, or by contacting Sonya Marquez at smarquez [at] cabq.gov or 505-917-6436.

Mark your calendars for a lovely free Christmas event at the Old Church, the Festival of the Nativities Saturday and Sunday December 18th and 19th from 10 am - 5 pm. It’s a wonderful display of nativities from around the world. Enter the raffle for a chance to win one of three nativities. Thank you Corrales Historical Society for this seasonal gift. You can see a lovely presentation on their website at corraleshistory.org.

It’s been a rough few years. Many seem frustrated and discouraged, doubting whether the government gets anything done. Locally, the answer is yes. The Village has accomplished many positive things in finance, personnel and infrastructure. I’ll be sharing Village achievements with you in my annual December overview.

The final Village Council Meeting of 2021 will take place next Tuesday, December 14th at 6:30 pm via Zoom. For a copy of the (lengthy) Agenda and the public packet, please go online.  The Zoom link is on the first page of the Agenda.

This weekend, enjoy our Village and experience holiday cheer. Shop local (visitcorrales.com)! Or take a break from it all and just breathe in our newly brisk wintry air. Whatever you choose to do, stay safe and enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
