Heritage Day is Corrales’ spring celebration of its history. This year, the Archives Committee of the Corrales Historical Society is pleased to present a full day of events and speakers, with a special emphasis on Farming, Then & Now.

HERITAGE DAY EVENTS:

All Day: History Hunt
Challenge yourself to find and identify historic elements of the Old Church, Casa San Ysidro and the cemetery

Farming Exhibits
Check out the church and the church grounds for interesting farming exhibits: old implements, new and old tractors, plows, a milk separator, a copper still, and a corn sheller and corn grinder that kids can operate. There will also be posters and videos about Corrales farming and two large oil paintings by local resident Gilbert Lopez featuring a 1930s water wheel and a wheat harvest.

All Day: Cemetery Tours
Take a tour of the camposanto with a knowledgeable docent or on your own.

Memorial Displays for Evelyn Curtis Losack, Irene Tafoya, and Phil Modica
Enjoy photos and family memories, plus the CHS Archives collection of Memorial Books with obituaries from the last 15 years.

Wedding Dress
Irene Tafoya’s weeding dress that she wore in 1947 will be on display.

11 am - Talk on Farming THEN
Dorothy Curtis Trafton will reminisce about farming on the Curtis farm in the 1940s and ‘50s here in Corrales. Can you hear the lettuce? Do mules know when it’s lunch time?

1 pm - Dedication of Bench to Honor Evelyn Curtis Losack
This special bench was made from the old cottonwood tree that stood on the church grounds. Speakers will include Pauline Eisenstadt, bench artist Anthony Romero, Councilor Phil Gasteyer and Stacia Spragg-Braude, author of a book about Evelyn: If There’s Squash Bugs in Heaven, I Ain’t Staying.

2 pm – Talk on Farming NOW
Making farming sustainable in Corrales. Speakers will include a member of the Wagner family and Aaron and Elan Silverblatt, owners of Silverleaf farms.
