Mayor's Message for April 12th, 2024

Corrales home on a cloudy day

Many of us have received our 2024 Notice of Value from the Sandoval County Assessor. In some cases there may be a significant increase; in what you may think is incorrect taxation. That may be the case. You should go to the Assessor’s office or visit their website and file a protest if you believe you have good cause to believe a mistake was made. You have until May 1, 2024. The exemptions are the issue in most cases, and you will need to be sure they are well-documented and supported. Sometimes these errors occur, no one is out to get anybody, and unfortunately, the village has no jurisdiction nor say in how any decision is made at the county assessor’s office. Look closely at what they sent you and ask questions if you believe they are in error. More information and forms for filing a protest can be found on the website.

The Village in the Village received a Corrales Community Grant, and, in partnership with Corrales MainStreet, developed a comprehensive Senior Resource Guide. This booklet is FREE and contains information about who to contact for assistance. Copies are available at the administration office, the Corrales Library, or Corrales Main Street. Did I say it was FREE?

The Village government is starting to put together our capital projects plan known as the ICIP. This list is then used to request capital outlay funding from our state legislators. Those of you who are reading this should let your councilor or the administration know if there is something you think the village needs. There is no doubt that important but minor things are often overlooked on this list. The list, when compiled and approved by the Village Council in June, can be viewed on the website. These items will be discussed at upcoming council meetings and you can still watch them on ZOOM. Remember, as a citizen of this Village, this county, this state, this country, you have every right to ask questions. Contact our Village Clerk, Melanie Romero, at mromero [at] corrales-nm.org () or 505-897-0502 ext 208 if you aren’t sure who your counselor is.

The Corrales Growers’ Market operates to support the traditional agricultural economics of the Village of Corrales and to provide community access to sustainable sources of locally grown food. They support the preservation of farmland, the sustainability of family farms, and local agricultural production by providing agricultural producers with a marketing facility for the sale of their products directly to consumers. The regular season will start April 28, from 9 AM until 12 noon. Mark your calendars. Get there early, get the freshest vegetables, and ask the vendor how to grow them yourself.

HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE

Ready Set Go is a wildland fire program to help you in case a fire breaks out.

Right now, we should all be in the READY phase- prepare a Family disaster plan that includes meeting locations, how you can communicate with each other, and practice the plan. You need to include all of your animals in the plan from large to small. Have fire extinguishers and know how to use them. Know where your electric gas and water shutoffs are. Plan and practice evacuation routes from your home.  The normal way you go to work each day may be blocked.  Designate an emergency meeting place outside the area where you live. Have an emergency supply kit. Designate a trusted person outside of your area as a communications point of contact each family member can check-in with.  Have a list of emergency contact numbers in your supply kit.  Have a portable radio such as a NOAA weather radio so you can stay up to date with fire and weather announcements. Sign up for CodeRed so you get notifications.  Make sure your cell phones are set to accept Government Alerts.

As the weather warms up and yard work is in full swing, evaluate your property for fire hazards. Trees under and in powerlines are a hazard.  Remember a small tree you plant under a power line will grow and eventually can cause a fire.   If you have trees currently in the power line call PNM to have them trimmed or think about having them removed.   It is recommended you have three zones around your home when it comes to landscaping. Zone 1 is 0-30 feet around your home, with 0-5 feet closest to your home that should be hard surface and non-combustibles such as gravel or concrete.  The other landscaping should be low-growing vegetation like succulents and ground covers. Store firewood and other combustible materials 30 feet away from the home garage or porches.  Trim all branches at least 10 feet from roofs.

Next week we will put out information on SET and Zone 2.  You can find all of this and more valuable information.

New Mexico is one of only 5 states where respiratory virus activity is still high.  You can still receive a 23-24 COVID vaccine if you haven’t had one and if you are 65 or older you can have a second one.  If you are immunocompromised talk with your healthcare provider as you may qualify for additional vaccine as well as pre-exposure monoclonal antibodies.  The FDA has granted emergency use authorization for Pemivibart (Pemgard) for adolescents and adults with moderate to severe immunocompromising conditions.
