Mayor's Message for April 17th, 2020

La Entrada Park

It’s been a heck of a week in the neighborhood. We’ve had snow, wind and sunshine. You know; just another typical spring in New Mexico!

Our Village Council Meeting went well on Tuesday night. It was the first meeting for three Councilors, and it is clear the Council is fully engaged and working hard to get our Village through this pandemic and out even stronger on the other side. Councilor David Dornburg will be serving as your Mayor Pro Tem. Congratulations, Councilor Dornburg.

While most of us are at home, our essential construction projects are moving along. The Salce Basin Project is progressing well, and with a little bit of luck, will be substantially complete by the end of the month. Our Public Work crews have finished the improvements to the Corrales Community Library Parking lot. They are also busy re-striping our roads and fixing speed bumps. The Parks and Recreation Department is making improvements to the Gym ceiling  and the re-seeded fields are looking terrific. The Old Fire House remodel is in progress; Planning and Zoning is looking forward to being in a single office space.

The Corrales Community Library continues to add to its outreach. The latest idea is to enable patrons to check out books, which will be delivered to your door. Stay tuned for more information about this upcoming project. Meanwhile, check out the Children’s Story Hour and other terrific content on the library website. We even have a YouTube Channel!

A little bird told me the Village Mercantile cannot keep up with the demand for chicks. Looks like Corrales will be rolling in fresh eggs in the near future. Our local businesses are working hard to find ways to stay afloat in this unprecedented time. Go to visitcorrales.com and click on the “Corrales Business ‘Corrisis’ Update” to see how you can help. More and more merchants have websites where you can purchase fabulous goods and don’t forget: you can pick-up food at several of our restaurants. Please - we are in this together - so, if you can, please support our local businesses.

This week we heard that our efforts to flatten the curve are working. I urge you to stay with the program and stay home, shop alone and practice safe social distancing (with masks). Once again, I am thanking each of you for your efforts - it is keeping us safe.

On the upside, this weekend looks good for long walks, bird watching, horse and bike rides or just sitting outside in the sunshine. It’s a privilege for us and I know we will do it, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake
