Mayor's Message for April 1st, 2022

Newly Elected Officials

The Village of Corrales is now embarking with a new administration and legislative body, as the term of office for your newly elected officials begins today. The former administration set the bar high. Hopefully, our new group will be up to the task.

The early focus will be trying to get funding for the projects that have been discussed and planned over the past year and during the recent campaigns. It may not prove to be as easy as advertised by the state and federal government, as there are very specific guidelines to qualify for funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill.

Locally, we will try to move forward on the sewer system for some of the denser neighborhoods, start construction of the new gym at the Rec Center (although we still need additional funding to complete the project), come to a consensus on a performing arts center that has no funding at present, and address a recent issue of temporary housing for stray animals in the village.

On a more positive note, a spring bicycle fair is planned for April 30, 2022 at the Corrales Recreation Center from 10 AM-12 Noon, sponsored by the Village of Corrales Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. There will be a Bike Rodeo for children ages 4-14, and bike safety stations available to check your bike. Come learn how to fit a helmet properly, make basic repairs, change a tire, and how to properly fit a bike for the best ride.

Additionally, First Sunday, Corrales Arts in the Village, is April 3, 2022 throughout the Village from 10 am to 4 pm. Look for signs, balloons and pop-up tents showcasing artists, makers and creators.

The Winter Grower’s Market will take place on April 3, 2022, from 11 am - 1 pm at 500 Jones Rd. Come out and support your local growers.

Intel Corporation and Corrales MainStreet are now accepting applications for the Corrales Community Grant program. This program provides a source of funds for local organizations to get needed funds for projects. Go to www.visitcorrales.com for more information and a link to apply.

Covid boosters are available for people ages 50 and up. Registration for boosters is through https://goodtimes.vaccinenm.org/stay-ahead-nm/. If you have questions or need assistance registering, please call Fire Commander Tanya Lattin at 505-702-4182.

April is National Poetry month, and the Corrales Library will be celebrating by hosting Teen Blackout Poetry Project. Supplies and instructions are available in the YA room of the library. More information can be found here.

And above all, mark your calendars for April 16, 2022 for the Annual Corrales Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Corrales Foundation for children 8 and under at La Entrada Park. Rumor has it that Wile E. Coyote may be looking for a rabbit dinner.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask those who might have some interest to think about volunteering for one of our committees or commissions to get a feel about how our village government works and also see how well our staff does their job. I can’t imagine a finer group of people regardless of the size of the municipality.

Jim Fahey

Mayor of Corrales
