Mayor's Message for April 22, 2022

Village of Corrales Sign

We are under a high wind warning today from 9 am to midnight. The National Weather Service has announced we will be experiencing winds between 45 and 55 mph, with gusts up to 75 mph. Winds could blow down trees and/or power lines, patio furniture, gazebos, trampolines, and other loose yard items, as well as cause blowing dust, so be careful while out and about today.   We are at an extremely high fire risk, so remember: no outdoor burning, welding or use of other spark or heat generating equipment should be used today. No smoking outside. The bosque will not be a safe place to recreate today, but Fire Chief Anthony Martinez and his crew will be out patrolling the bosque keeping an eye out for fire. A big thank you to our entire fire crew, both full-time and volunteer fire-fighters, for all they do for the Village. For tips on how to prepare for a fire event, visit https://www.readyforwildfire.org/prepare-for-wildfire/get-set/wildfire-action-plan/

Today is also Earth Day.  Earth Day has been celebrated every April 22nd since the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The theme of Earth Day this year is “Invest in our planet.” Anything or any activity we can do to decrease our carbon footprint will be beneficial toward fighting climate change. https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2022/

Arbor Day is always the last Friday of April, which is the 29th this year.  It is a national holiday created to recognize the importance of trees. Arbor Day, like Earth Day, is a holiday that celebrates nature. What better place to enjoy these holidays than the Village of Corrales? https://www.arborday.org/celebrate/

Speaking of trees, the Corrales Tree Committee is sponsoring a demonstration of mistletoe pruning conducted by ISA Certified Arborist Harrison O’Connor on Friday, April 29th at 9 am in La Entrada Park. Mr. O’Connor and members of the Tree Committee will be available to answer questions regarding mistletoe management.

Sign-up sheets go up today at The Corrales Library for their ukulele classes, taught by Auttem Foglia. Classes will be every Wednesday, beginning May 4th and running until June 22nd, from 4-5 pm. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to play, this is a perfect opportunity to try it out. Instruments can be checked out from the library, and the classes are FREE thanks to support from the Friends of the Corrales Library. Classes are for ages 10 and up. Contact Sandra at the library 505-897-0733, or email her at sandra [at] corraleslibrary.org for more information.

The final performance of the Music in Corrales' 2021-2022 season will be tomorrow at 7:30 pm, with classical guitarist Stephen Marchionda. The program, entitled La guitarra poetica, features inspiring works by Scarlatti, Bach, Albéniz and Granados. https://www.musicincorrales.org/

Sunday, April 24th marks the start of the Corrales Grower’s Market regular season. Stop by and support our local growers from 9 am – 12 pm. Water has started appearing in the ditches, signaling that perhaps some irrigation may occur this year. Hopefully we can look forward to some amazing local produce this season.

After enjoying the Grower’s market in the morning, head over to The Historic Old San Ysidro Church At 2 pm, to catch Chuck Hornung presenting "The Four Legged Bootlegger: A Tale of New Mexico State Mounted Police." The event is free to the public.

Tuesday April 26th at 7 pm, The Corrales Library’s Author Series will host Charlie Dearing, discussing his book: "This Wild Earth". Contact Sandra [at] corraleslibrary.org to register and obtain a link. The event is free thanks to the sponsorship of the Friends of the Corrales Library. If you missed a previous Author Series event, you can find links to the recorded events on the library’s website.

Tickets for the 2022 Corrales Garden Tour go on sale May 1st. The tour will take place June 5th from 9 am to 4 pm at six gardens around the village. Keep an eye out for signs around the Village with more information in the coming weeks.

May 7th will see the grand opening of Loving Thunder Therapeutic Riding from 12 – 3 pm at 1 Calle Caballo Road.  They have recently moved into Corrales, Horse Capital of New Mexico, after 12 years in Rio Rancho.  TV personality Steve Stucker will be the MC, and there will be live music, tours of their new center, a live demonstration of their work, and lots of food.  RSVP’s are required for the event, call 505-475-2900.

Covid boosters are still ongoing. Registration for boosters is through https://goodtimes.vaccinenm.org/stay-ahead-nm/  You can also call Commander Tanya Lattin at 505-702-4182 for assistance with registration.

If you are a wastewater customer, you may have noticed you have not received a bill from the Village in a while for services. Due to circumstances beyond our control while switching billing programs, we have been unable to generate statements for wastewater service since November of 2021. Statements will be going out over the next week or so billing for the time period since the last ones were sent, but if you need assistance paying the amount due, please call the Village office at 505-897-0502 and ask to speak to Cindy Gomez. We will work with customers to figure out payment options.

The Village of Corrales installed a new sign at the administrative complex. It hasn’t always been easy for people to find Village Hall, and it wasn’t always intuitive where you were supposed to go to get things done. The complex at 4324 Corrales Road is home to five different buildings, which house the administration offices/police department headquarters, municipal court, planning and zoning department/animal services, the community center, and the senior center. Hopefully, this new signage will be informative for residents and visitors alike.
