Mayor's Message for April 24th, 2020

Blue Skies over the Valley

This week marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Mother Earth gave places like Los Angeles, Paris and Calcutta a gift: the same beautiful blue skies that we take for granted here in New Mexico. Our skies are such a great source of comfort.

Good news. The Village of Corrales (through the efforts of librarian Marian Frear), got a Wi-Fi hot spot from Albuquerque, who generously loaned it to us until June. This service will be available in the Village Hall parking lot on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons from 4 PM to 7 PM. The hot-spot can host up to 15 people at a time and login information will be posted on the side of the Village’s Chevy Transverse. Please spread the word to those who may not have Internet access or who need another place to log on. But don’t spread the virus - observe social distancing.

Looking for an unusual social event? This afternoon from 3 PM to 7 PM try the “Art-Gone-Viral” online art event. You will be able to view the work of more than 40 artists, speak with them and  perhaps even get a virtual tour of their studios. The organizers cannily note the event coincides with happy hour, so they suggest you grab the beverage of your choice, a tasty snack and then use the following link to join in: https://myboothcentral.com/v/events/art-gone-viral.

Hooray! Intel has completed the long-awaited improvements to the Thompson fence line trail. Erica Edgerly, the Intel Community liaison, will be sharing construction highlights and hopes for improved drainage at the Village Council meeting on Tuesday, April 28.

As always, the Council meeting begins at 6:30. The Agenda and public packet materials will be posted by this afternoon. Call-in instructions are on the Agenda and website. Public comment received by noon on Tuesday will be read into the record.

The Fire Department’s next phase of the fire hydrant project will begin early next week along Loma Larga. Check the Village website under Current Projects for further information. It’s a great project and a good reminder to take special care in this season of high winds and increased fire danger.

We’ve done it! New Mexico has flattened the COVID19 curve and currently has the medical resources to meet expected demand. The stay at home order is extended to May 15 but the Governor is making plans to get the state reopened and wants local input. To that end, Corrales is reaching out to businesses so together we can develop ideas and create safety plans. You bet we’ll be ready when it’s time to get back out there.

Meanwhile, we will stay the course and remain grateful to all who are allowing us to stay at home: health care workers, cleaners, fire and police, grocery workers, sanitation workers, truck drivers, farmers, construction workers and many more. Thank you. It has been suggested that to honor them we should Howl in Gratitude each evening at 7pm. Coyotes might join us?

CARMA has a great program to help pet owners having trouble feeding their pets, thanks to Barbara Bayer and other generous members of our community. See details below.

The first Regular Season Growers’ Market is this Sunday, April 26, from 9-12. Check out the corralesgrowersmarket.com site for a map and details. The weather is a glorious contrast to well……everything else. Please enjoy yourself outdoors or in your cars at the Growers’ Market. Stay safe and well. You’ve got this and you are doing great, Corrales-style.
