Mayor's Message for April 26th, 2024

Viva Corrales logo

This next month will bring a lot of activities to the Village of Corrales. ¡Viva Corrales! starts this Sunday, April 28, at 9 AM at the Rec Center. The Corrales Growers’ Market leads with their first market of the regular season with “Rides, Strides, and Giddy-up” close behind at the Top Form Arena and in the New Gym. In addition, a health and wellness event co-sponsored by WESST (Women’s Economic Self-Sufficiency Team) will also be held that day. The Sandoval County Master Gardeners will be out at the Grower’s Market with their annual plant sale. This is a Corrales MainStreet activity designed to showcase the unique mix of culture, artistic, and agricultural activities held at the beginning of the growing and festival season. Most of the activity will be in the Rec Center, Top Form Arena, and Growers’ market areas. Parking will be available at the Rec Center and at the vacant property just north of the Post Office. Check the April 19th issue of the Corrales Comment to get a review of all the activities planned as part of this year’s ¡Viva Corrales! event.

There will be docent led tours of the Historic Old San Ysidro Church on April 27th from 12 - 5 PM. There is a new Ideum Touch Table that features a large array of old Corrales Historical Society photographs. It is a good way to learn more about Corrales.

Be aware there are anticipated high flows in the Rio Grande again this year. Be sure to wear your life preserver if you go kayaking. There has already been one rescue and Anthony Martinez, our fire chief, is planning extra patrols to monitor the situation.

Speaking of our fire chief, he just reached 34 years of service with the Corrales Fire Department. He has certainly aged well…or started very young. He was honored at the Village Council meeting early this week. We are fortunate and grateful for his service.

We honored two other long-term employees for their service at a staff meeting for all Village employees held this past Tuesday. Fire Department Engineer David Lane was recognized for 19 years of service to the Village, and Assistant Librarian Sandra Baldonado for 16 years of service.

This is also expected to be a hot, dry summer. So do your best to remove dead limbs, branches, and /or trees from around your house. The fire chief and Code Enforcement officer Sherrie Rice are trying to be proactive by identifying potential problem areas and informing homeowners what they can do to protect their property.

Arbor Day is today, Friday, April 26. The Village of Corrales has been named  as a Tree Cities USA member for the 11th consecutive year. When planting trees, stay away from power lines and prune the trees you have so they don’t impact power lines.

As mentioned last week, we are working on our requests for funding to the legislature for their next session in January 2025. If there is something that you think the Village should have or do, send that information, the what and why, to your councilor. These items will be discussed at the next few council meeting and you will have an opportunity to see, hear, and make comments during the discussion. Upcoming meetings are listed on the Village website.

Speaking of the Village website, the software that runs our site underwent an upgrade this last week, and the new website launched on April 23rd. We are still finding places where the upgrade broke our site, and we are identifying areas where pages have gone missing. Please be patient with us as we work through this – the staff must comb through more than 2600 pages of material on the site and figure out how to retrieve parts that were lost in the migration to the new software. Some items can be fixed by Village staff, but some must be worked on by the website company. We believe the website will be more user friendly once all the kinks have been worked out.

HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE

Over the last two weeks, we talked about the Ready and Set aspects of the Ready, Set, Go! (RSG) program to help people prepare for a possible wildfire. Since Corrales is situated along the Bosque, all residents should be aware of this program. This week we will discuss the Go! portion of the program. If there is an active wildfire in your area, you need to be prepared before it’s time to GO! If time allows, review your Wildfire Action Plan and complete the pre-evacuation preparation steps listed in the RSG guide. Load your emergency supply kit and evacuation bags (including pet kits) into your vehicle and park facing the road for a quick exit. You don’t need to wait for an evacuation order – if you feel threatened evacuate early. Once an evacuation order is issued, there is no time to waste. Ensure your bags and kit are in your vehicle, locate and load your pets, wear clothing that will protect you against head and flying embers, and GO! More information can be found on the Village’s website at https://www.corrales-nm.org/fire/page/wildfire-safety-and-preparation.
