Mayor's Message for April 2nd, 2021

Vaccine Shipment

Spring, a time of renewal and rebirth, is bringing us crisp mornings and lovely afternoons. April is apt to be warmer and dryer than normal, so please be fire safe.

Good news as to COVID-19 vaccinations. Next Monday, April 5, everyone 16 and over will be eligible for vaccination. There are simplified procedures for those 75 and older. (vaccinenm.org or 1-800-600-3453). 45% of New Mexicans have received at least one shot. Please keep it up. The sooner we are all vaccinated, the sooner we can enjoy our pre-pandemic lives.

Our Corrales Fire Department is helping home-bound residents get vaccinated (https://corralescomment.com/2021/03/23/2021-march-20-issue-vaccines-offered-for-home-bound-in-corrales/). Corrales, under the leadership of Commander Lattin, is now a certified DOH vaccination site and this week we got our first shipment of vaccine. Vaccination clinics are long days; many thanks to those feeding the troops. Village employees and local volunteers are making a huge effort on our behalfPlease do not undermine their efforts. There is an uptick in cases right here in Corrales. On Wednesday Corrales accounted for 15% of the new infections in Sandoval County. Sandoval County has gone up 32% in infections in the last 14 days. Continue to obey the public health guidelines. Act responsibly and support businesses that do likewise. If you see or are exposed to something unsafe: 1) Speak up 2) Leave 3) Report the violation (covid.enforcement [at] state.nm.us) Do not put up with stupid behavior: it endangers us all and is unworthy of our smart and beautiful community.

A citizen reached out to praise Corrales Police Department Officers Milane and Caizza for their calm and professional manner in responding to her call. She called them “a credit to the Corrales Police Department.” Thanks!

Time to help young readers! April is “Read to Me” month in Corrales. Gather new and gently used books and put them in one of the 5 big blue “Read to Me” bins located at Village Administration Hall, Corrales Community Library, The Corrales Fire Station and the Village Mercantile. Let’s make sure no child in Corrales suffers a reading gap. Thank you to all the participants, to Kiwanis and a special shout out to Josephine Darling, and Cassie and Lorel Medina of the Cibola Key Club.

The Special Session of the New Mexico Legislature is over. The big news is that starting in April of 2022, legal sale of cannabis for adult recreational use will begin. We will receive many more details in the upcoming months.

It is Easter weekend and the weather is supposed to be in the 80’s! As you celebrate, perhaps take a moment to reflect on the past year and the possibilities that lie ahead. Sports-wise, March Madness may be over on Monday, but baseball is just starting. On Sunday, visit the Corrales Growers Market from 11-1. Whatever you choose to do, please stay safe and enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.
