Mayor's Message for April 3rd, 2020

2020 Census

April is here and the wind is blowing, which is completely normal. Comforting, since we are all living with so much that is not. I want, once again, to thank you for all you are doing to keep yourselves and each other safe.

Corrales now officially has three new Councilors: Bill Woldman, Stuart Murray and Zac Burkett. Congratulations. Also, please join me in thanking outgoing Councilors Clauser, Fahey and Wright for their service to the community. As a group, we will be working hard to make sure our Village not only survives, but thrives.

Speaking of which, the Corrales Community Library website has some new features. You can now get movies in the ebook collection, Overdrive. If you don’t have a library card, get one at: https://corrales.biblionix.com/catalog/. Thank you to our librarians who are working hard to add content and lighten our time at home. And also to our Public Works and Parks and Recreation employees, who are busy sprucing up our parks and parking lots.

Businesses! Friends and neighbors, we must do everything we can to support and sustain our small businesses during this time of shutdown. Go to visitcorrales.com for the latest list of businesses and how you can help them. It’s vital to our wellbeing as a community.

Please participate in Census 2020. Go to https://2020census.gov and fill out the form. Funding for many programs depends on an accurate count of our population. As you can imagine, those monies are going to be very important to us as we move forward from this time.

Also, let’s not lose sight of our democratic processes. Make your voice heard by requesting an absentee ballot. Visit: https://www.sos.state.nm.us/voting-and-elections/voting-faqs/absentee-v….

We have a natural treasure right here, the Corrales Bosque Preserve. Thanks to the efforts of the Bosque Commission (kudos to Joan Morrison and Joan Hashimoto) and Corrales web guru Aaron Gjullin, we now have beautiful content on-line. Then enjoy the Bosque in person. Just remember to observe social distance and keep your canine buddies on a leash.

Together, we MUST reduce the rate of spread of COVID19. How? By following the safety directives. (Check corrales-nm.org for local information and https://cv.nmhealth.org for NM updates). Our state has a “C” grade for social distancing, but Sandoval County has a strong “B” (we’ve reduced our interactions by 37%). C’mon, if we get over 40%, we’ll not only get an “A,” but we’ll literally save lives. Let’s up our game and then stay the course.

Corrales is a special place. So many are doing things to help each other: food donations, phone visits, rainbow tours and a boy named Braeden doing back-flips for his neighbors, to name just a few. We will get through this, together. Stay strong and stay safe, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake
Mayor of Corrales
