Mayor's Message for April 9th, 2021

Corrales Road

We do know it is spring: wind and heat. Please remain vigilant about fire safety.

Grant money to help Corrales! The 2021 Corrales Community Grant Program, sponsored by Intel Corporation in cooperation with Corrales MainStreet, is now accepting applications until April 30. Qualifying grants should focus on Education, Empowering Girls and Women, the Environment, and Quality of Life. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: the impact of the project/program on Corrales citizens; sustainability of the project/program; clear and measurable goals and objectives; creativity, and appropriate budget with specific equipment costs.  A total of $8,000 will be split between grantees and should be spent by December 31, 2021. Check out the application at visitcorrales.com. Submit questions and completed applications to visitcorrales [at] gmail.com.

Music in Corrales, with the generous sponsorship of Sandy Gold, is offering a virtual concert of Folksinger/Songwriter Joe Crookston. The on-demand concert will be available anytime from April 17-April 25. Tickets are $15. For complete details, go to https://www.musicincorrales.org/concert/joe-crookston/.

The pace of COVID-19 vaccinations continues to increase. In New Mexico, almost 50% have one shot; 32% are fully vaccinated. Sandoval has remained in the yellow and after an alarming spike, cases in Corrales appear to be declining. While COVID may not be as deadly among younger people, evidence suggests many suffer long-term side effects. Please be careful a little while longer. Thank you.

For six months, the Planning & Zoning Commission has been looking into Village policies regarding the construction of new casitas and has information to share with the community. The Commission has compiled an Executive Summary of their research that explores some of the challenges the Village has faced in enforcing our current ordinances and some of the pros and cons of allowing new casitas to be built. Find and read the Executive Summary and some supporting documents. The Commission is also seeking your input. Please complete an online survey on the main page of the Village website by clicking on the orange banner. The direct link to the survey is https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N79TW2QPaper versions will also be available in the lobby of the Village Administration building next week. Your voice is a key element in deciding the best way forward for the Village.

There’s a Council Meeting next Tuesday April 13 at 6:30. For an Agenda and packet of public materials,. As always, you will find directions on the Agenda on how to participate via Zoom. Should be an interesting meeting. Over the years, there’s been discussion about whether Corrales should take over Corrales Road (State Highway 448). Dr. Jill Mosher, District 3 Assistant District Engineer from the NMDOT, will be presenting her viewpoint and answering Council and public questions. No decision will be made, but we need to gather as many facts as we can to make an informed decision. Also, VFW Post 5432 will be recognizing Courtney Koontz of Trees of Corrales and Corrales Parks and Recreation Director Lynn Siverts for beautifying the Veterans’ Memorial in La Entrada Park.

This weekend the weather is supposed to be in the 70’s with low winds. Get out and enjoy our trails or check out what’s open in the Village. Maybe you’d prefer to stay close to home and garden. Whatever you choose to do, please stay safe and healthy, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
