Mayor's Message for August 13th, 2021

Corrales Elementary Crossing

This week has brought hot weather, tricky air quality and some rain. Continue to take care of yourselves and your animals; check the local stations for air quality and weather alerts.

Students are back in school, so please be extra careful on the roads, especially in school zones, and look out for pedestrians, cyclists and buses. Part-time School Crossing Guards are still needed at Corrales Elementary School and the duties can be shared by multiple people to be scheduled based on availability. The current time slots are MON-FRI 8AM-9AM; MON, TUE, THU & FRI 3PM-4PM and WED 12PM-1PM, subject to change. Please submit applications (https://www.corrales-nm.org/police/page/school-crossing-guard) to the Village Clerk's Office (agjullin [at] corrales-nm.org).

COVID cases continue to increase. Both Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties are still at “substantial” risk. Corrales has new cases almost every day and our community has lost people to this new surge. What can we do? 1) Get vaccinated. 2) Wear a mask indoors or in crowded places. Situational awareness and adaptability will get us through. If you have concerns about the vaccine, please contact Commander Tanya Lattin at (505)-702-4182. She is here to help.

Yes, there was a TV production crew at the “Sears” house and the Montessori school; you can try to spot these local locations on a future episode of the ABC series, “Big Sky" (https://nmfilm.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/NMFO_ProductionAnnounceme…).

This year produced a bumper crop of produce. If you have too much, why not share it with others who need it? To donate produce, go to: https://seed2need.org/produce/.

It has been a tough year. If you have fallen behind on rent and utilities, there may be monies available to help you. Go to https://www.renthelpnm.org/ or call the Emergency Rental Assistance office at: 1(833)-485-1334.

The Corrales MainStreet fundraiser, Starry Nights, takes place August 28. Enjoy Detective Dinner Theater: Murder on the Rio Grande. Details at https://visitcorrales.com. Proceeds fund Corrales MainStreet’s support of our arts and culture district and business community.

Buy season tickets now for the 2021-2022 season of Music in Corrales. The first of 8 concerts will feature Corrales’ own Bobby Shew in La Entrada Park on September 18 (https://www.musicincorrales.org/current-season/).

Check out the Council Meeting next Tuesday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m. It will be in-person and via zoom. Masks and social distancing will be required for in-person attendees. For the Agenda and public packet, please go to the Village website at: https://www.corrales-nm.org/villagecouncil/page/regular-council-meeting….

The Village uses various methods to communicate with you, our citizens: public Council and Commission meetings, town halls, minutes, our website, the Mayor’s Message, articles in the Corrales Comment and even the quarterly bill from Road Runner Waste Services Inc. Each bill contains a one-page insert; check it out for important information from Fire, Police, Parks and Recreation and Animal Control (https://www.corrales-nm.org/community/page/road-runner-flyers).

Vote for Pet Mayor! The candidate with the most votes will represent Corrales; all monies raised help Corrales Animal Services. Go to https://www.corralesharvestfestival.com to check out the hopefuls and cast your vote. The winner will be announced on Sunday morning, September 26, followed by a joyous Pet Parade down Corrales Road.

Speaking of parades, the Village of Corrales is putting together a 50th Anniversary Parade, which will start September 26, right after the Pet Parade (local priorities, right?) Call it a 4th of July make-up!

Looks to be in the 80’s this weekend, partly cloudy with some chance of occasional showers. Nothing to stop you from checking out the local scene. On Sunday, visit the Corrales Growers’ Market from 9-12. Whatever you choose to do, stay safe and have some fun, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
