Mayor's Message for August 14th, 2020

Truck Full of Zucchini

HOT! HOT! HOT! These days bring high temperatures and little chance of rain. Please take care of yourselves and your animals. Hydrate and be careful when working or exercising out of doors.

Thank you so much to the Wagners for their generous donation of fresh, beautiful zucchini to the Corrales Senior Center. At least the heat (see paragraph above) is good for growing great big squash.

The Village is starting its annual audit procedure. The audit will be performed mostly remotely this year, but the report should be done by December 15th. Also, we are hoping to schedule a virtual ribbon cutting for our new Planning and Zoning and Animal Services Building in the next week or two.

The Corrales Community Swimming Pool will close August 21. Many thanks to Lynn Siverts, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department. Through his creativity, Corrales has been able to provide a safe, cool and bright spot for our residents this summer.

COVID-19 update. New Mexicans are doing a fine job in bringing the virus rate back down. We have the lowest positivity rate in the West (2.4%, as compared to Texas at 20.4%). We are meeting every gating criteria except one. New Mexico still has too high a rate of daily cases per 100,000 population. The goal is 168 cases or less per day on a rolling 7 day average (less than 8 per 100,000). Yesterday was 177 so we are close.

Are we out of the woods? NO. There were only 3 cases in Sandoval County this week; unfortunately, one of them is right here in Corrales, our 35th case. So, we must stay the course. Avoid gatherings of more than 5. Avoid backyard parties and keep Labor Day celebrations virtual. It’s especially important for our children, so they can physically return to school. Kids and young people are getting COVID. We’ve got to protect them. Most of all, keep wearing those masks in public. It is the single best thing we can do. Check out the Duke experiment to see which is most effective. Sadly, it’s bad news for bandana and fleece wearers. https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/08/us/duke-university-face-mask-test-trnd/index.html  BTW, if you have seen an official looking “mask exemption card,” it’s a fake and can lead to a felony charge.

Because we have less than 50 cases, our 87048 zip code still glows a beautiful yellow surrounded by a sea of red (See photo below). Please help us keep it that way. Your Village is committed to doing all it can to keep you safe. But as you well know, it really is up to our individual actions. Just like you, I’ve got COVID Fatigue (See:https://health.ucdavis.edu/health-news/newsroom/covid-fatigue-is-hittin…). But we cannot let our fear and stress cause us to risk each others’ lives and health by failing to follow simple COVID 19 practices.

Next Tuesday is our virtual Corrales Council Meeting at 6:30. The Agenda and Public Packet will be available today on the website, as well as information on how you can join.

Visit the Corrales Growers Market on Sunday from 9-12. It’s peak produce season. Whatever you do, please stay safe and cool, Corrales-style.
