Mayor's Message for August 18, 2023

Multi-use center for education, community and the arts

The Village Administration is continuing to move forward with the planning, design, construction documents, and a 3-D virtual tour of the multi-use facility on the former Jones Family property. There will a new committee to look at the Conceptual plan, seen above, that we hope will be fine tuned based on the additional input from other interested parties in the community. This idea was first brought to the Village council about 20 years ago, but has languished until access to property and funds made it a possibility. There is a need for a place where the history of the Village can be on display, presentations can be made, forums (candidates for office) can be held, musical performances and plays presented. Meeting rooms, which are in short supply in the Village, would be available to both large and small groups to rent. The adjacent property to the north could provide not only more secure space for our Growers’ Market, but also additional parking for events. We can secure a loan for the amount of the facility, but we are researching grants with perhaps a limited match from the Village since we have already spent $1.4 million over the years on the entire property. That includes the original purchase of the portion of the Jones property where the old house sat, plus the water rights and the demolition and clean-up that was necessary because of asbestos in the structure. So, a little bit of progress has been made along the way by the last couple of administrations. Stop by the lobby of the Administration Building, look at the plan, leave your thoughts or contact your councilor and let them know what you think. We believe this will do for educational activities in the Village what the Rec Center has done for athletic and family outdoor activities. The original committee that did the initial planning is forming a non-profit group, much like the Friends of Corrales Library, to help with fund raising as a private entity and will continue to provide some input to the Village.

Our initial approach to the speeding question discussed at the last council meeting will require an inventory of streets to determine where there is or isn’t striping on the street, and the length and width of each public road. Once an inventory has been completed, the Village will begin restriping public roads to have lanes 10 feet wide with a center stripe. Outside striping on the shoulder will be done if there is a shoulder. Stripes will be 4 inches in width. Speeds will continue to be monitored by the police department in reportedly problem areas. Our next step may include further traffic calming methods where a speeding problem is identified. Increased signage is planned so that excuse of “didn’t know the speed limit” that our judge reported will not be supported by the evidence on the ground. We ask all Corraleños to follow the speed limits as posted. It is safer for you, your children, and your neighbors.

Corrales will elect its municipal judge and council members for districts 2, 5 and 6 in November. If you would like to run for one of these offices, candidate filing day is August 29th,  from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Sandoval County Clerk's Office. CRIME AND SAFETY REPORT

On Mon. 08/07 a resident of Camino Vega Verde reported that his rear residential glass door had been struck and damaged by a landscaping rock at about 10:15PM.

On Wed. 08/09 a police report was filed concerning the fraudulent opening of a mobile phone account. The victim is unaware of how / when his personal information was compromised. Stay vigilant about safeguarding your personal / financial data both on paper and online, shred unneeded sensitive documents, use strong passwords, avoid public WiFi networks and consider placing a freeze on your credit to help thwart identity thieves.

At about 2:00PM on Fri. 08/11 police were advised of a road rage incident on Corrales RD near Tenorio RD, during which the reporting party was allegedly being “brake-checked” by the driver in front of him. The caller stated that he subsequently went around the vehicle and when he stopped at a later point, his vehicle was pushed forward by the other (causing minor damage), which fled from the scene. Don’t let an aggressive driver bait you into a road rage incident. Refrain from reciprocating inappropriate behaviors. If necessary, call the police (preferably have a passenger call or use a hands-free device; 9-1-1 for emergencies / 505-891-7226 for a non-emergency in Sandoval County) for assistance and proceed to drive toward the nearest police station or crowded public place.
