Mayor’s Message for August 20th, 2021

Liam Knight Pond

Corrales has been having very nice late summer weather. However, still be on the watch for late afternoon thunderstorms.

The Village hired McKenzie Jenkins as the new Parks and Recreation Specialist. McKenzie served for years as Head Guard at the Corrales Community Pool and will be planning the upcoming recreational programs, while pursuing entrance to medical school.  Welcome McKenzie!

New Mexico is still experiencing an increase in COVID cases and hospitalizations. To “blunt” this surge, the governor has mandated mask-wearing when indoors and vaccinations for state and school employees. Many public and private organizations are following suit. Proudly, 2/3 of New Mexicans are fully vaccinated, and the numbers are climbing. Thank you.

What about those 3rd mRNA or booster shots? People with immune-suppressed conditions are eligible to register for and receive a booster now (https://cvvaccine.nmhealth.org/my-registration.html). Check with your physician if you have questions. Next week, expect more guidance from the CDC about booster availability, with full rollout due around September 20.  Meanwhile, the FDA hopes to issue full approval of the Pfizer vaccine by Labor Day. Commander Lattin is happy to help at (505) 702-4182.

Corrales Road has been striped. Crosswalks are soon to follow! They are going to focus on getting the school crossings done first and then the others. Thank you for your patience.

On Tuesday, the Village Council adopted Ordinance 21-06, an updated cannabis ordinance, which was necessary to come into compliance with the state legalization law (Cannabis Regulation Act passed by the New Mexico State legislature). The Ordinance will be available for review once the amendments are double and triple checked (https://www.corrales-nm.org/ordinances). Thanks to all the citizens who gave input, wrote letters and attended meetings. Your voices are important.

There’s still plenty of time to grab tickets for the Starry Nights fundraiser (https://visitcorrales.com/starry-night) or to buy season tickets for the upcoming season of Music in Corrales (https://www.musicincorrales.org).

Ex Novo Brewing Co. got a great write up on their expansion in the Albuquerque Journal this week. Check it out at https://www.abqjournal.com/2420533/earthly-delights-ex-novo-brewing-co-… and maybe stop by for a drink and one of their many food truck options!

This weekend the weather will be warm but cool early mornings offer a great chance to get out on our trails. Still time to shop local and on Sunday, from 9-12, don’t forget to visit the Corrales Growers’ Market. Whatever you do, take time to enjoy these last weeks of August and stay safe and cool, Corrales-style.
