Mayor's Message for August 21st, 2020

Fire Truck Birthday Bash

Corrales will experience more record breaking temperatures this weekend and the Medio fire has caused dangerously poor air quality. So please, watch yourselves when out of doors and keep hydrated.

The Corrales Fire Department really made a little boy’s birthday special this year and he dressed for the occasion. Happy Birthday Josiah from all of us.

Terrible fires are raging in our state and in California. Answering the call for help, some CFD personnel are going to battle the blaze in California, all expenses paid through an Emergency Mutual Aid Compact (they will be tested for COVID and quarantine upon return). Fire personnel all over the country come to each other’s aid. We wish you safe travels and return.

COVID-19 cases are coming way down and New Mexico is now shining yellow (see slideshow below). We’ve met all 7 of our gating criteria and have a 133 rolling-day case average, well below the target of 168. Kudos! But we know the virus is sneaky strong and comes back whenever we give it a chance. While it’s looking good, we need more time showing low numbers so we can take the inevitable rise in cases when we do reopen. Until we get a vaccine, what works is to wear a mask, stay safely distanced from one another, limit groups to 5 or less and wash your hands. These simple sounding steps are hard to do day-in, day-out, aren’t they?  Let’s show each other the support we need to hang in there until we defeat the virus. We can start also planning our fun and safe Labor Day celebrations now (see infographic in slideshow below).

What has happened to the 4+ million dollars we discovered in investment accounts?  After an exhaustive review by a forensic accounting firm, the Village is now confident these monies are truly ours. We still must reconcile our accounts so that all the monies are in the correct fund “buckets.” That process will likely start next week and will take some time. Our goal is to ensure fiscal accuracy, a healthy reserve and a plan for prudent stewardship to see our Village through the upcoming economic challenges caused not only by COVID-19 but also by drops in oil and gas revenues.

This week we celebrated the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, a right that American women struggled 70 years to obtain. Women were not the only ones who had to fight hard for the right to vote, but today only about half of us do so. Voting is a right we can’t take it for granted; we can’t think it doesn’t matter. Voting is fundamental. Stay tuned for information about all the ways you will be able to cast your ballot.

This weekend brings us the Corrales Growers Market on Sunday from 9-12. Mornings are still cool, allowing us to get out on our trails and byways. Stay safe and take care of yourselves, Corrales-style.
