Mayor's Message for August 4, 2023

Obey the speed limits

How do we decide local speed limits? State laws typically require a municipality to measure the speeds that drivers travel on certain streets and use the data to adjust the speed limits. The streets where local officials are required to do speed surveys are known as collectors and arterials. The speed limit is then set at or below the speed at which 85% of people drive under good conditions. Data has shown that traveling at or near the mean speed of 85% of drivers results in the lowest crash risk. Lowering speed limits may reduce average driving speeds, but it is generally difficult to enforce and obtain broad compliance with a lowered speed limit on a roadway designed for higher speed or that has a long history of a previously greater speed. Data is necessary before setting or changing a speed limit in order to determine the “85%” guideline. We will be discussing speed limits and speeding in the Village at the council meeting next Tuesday.

If the first week in August is unusually warm,
The winter will be white and long.
–Weather folklore

Hot, sunny, and dry weather is anticipated for at least another week, but based on “folklore” we may be really cold and get some snow this winter. Yeah, right.

There will be an update of the comprehensive plan presented at the council meeting next week, and there will be a vote on the bond language for the ballot.

The concrete slab for the Animal Services Building is to be poured next week after inspection and approval of the rebar construct that holds the slab. The prefab building is on-track to be delivered on August 30th.

If you want to run for Village Council or for Municipal Judge, candidate filing day is August 29th from 9 AM and 5 PM at the Sandoval County Clerk’s office. HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE

Covid is still out there. The fire department is holding vaccine drive-through clinics, including pediatric, for anyone who has not received a bi-valent vaccine. You can register by going to https://goodtimes.vaccinenm.org/stay-ahead-nm/. Free covid tests are available at Village Hall, the Corrales Library, and the fire station. If you feel sick, please stay home!

There have been cases of West Nile Virus in the state. Symptoms include headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue. Please take precautions to discourage mosquitos on your property, including eliminating standing water. Make sure to use insect repellant, wear long sleeves and pants and keep your windows and doors closed if they are not screened. For more information, visit the Department of Health’s website: nmhealth.org.

CRIME AND SAFETY UPDATE

On Wed. 07/26 CPD investigated the death of a 61-year-old resident, which appears to have been the result of him taking a large number of medications (including Hydrocodone) which had been prescribed to a family member along with alcohol. Medical Examiner / toxicology reports are pending. If you or someone you care about have a substance abuse problem and / or are experiencing mental wellness issues, please reach out for help before it’s too late. https://nmcrisisline.com/

Shortly before 2:00PM on Wed. 07/26 police stopped a reckless driver who was traveling at more than twice the speed limit on Loma Larga near W. Meadowlark. The 16-year-old male from Albuquerque was found to be unlicensed and his vehicle was not registered or insured. The car was towed from the scene and the driver was released to his Aunt after being issued multiple citations. Please instill and reinforce good driving habits in your teens before letting them navigate the roadways on their own.

Corrales Elementary School is back in session as of Thursday 08/03. Please be extra careful on the roads and keep an eye out for students and stopped school buses.
