Mayor's Message for August 6th, 2021

Corrales has been getting more rain, but in sensible amounts. Throughout monsoon season, continue to stay alert. Can you smell the green chile roasting? Yes, you can. Wow - summer vacation is almost over; it’s back to school on August 11th.

We all enjoy our safe Corrales environment. But if you experience anything that needs police response, please call Dispatch at 505-898-7585.  Put this number in your phone and on your fridge. While it may be tempting to call the local police office, all calls are routed through regional Dispatch, so it’s the fastest way to get help. Thank you.

The path through the pandemic is not a straight line. As we work through the Delta surge and getting higher vaccination rates, the new normal is being able to adapt to changing guidelines. Right now, that means, vaccinated or not, please wear masks indoors in locales with substantial risk (that’s Sandoval County and us).  During August, NMDOH is offering a $100 vaccination incentive. (https://goodtimes.vaccinenm.org/stay-ahead-nm/ or call 1-855-600-3453). Thanks for being flexible: we will get through this together.

Here’s what’s happening in August for adults at The Corrales Community Library. The Corrales Library Book Club is reading The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell (8/30 at 2:30 pm); Spanish conversation is held every Thursday at 6:00 pm and Stitch Club is meeting every 2nd Saturday at 10:30 am. Join authors Paul and Carlos Meyer via zoom as they discuss their book, Under the Cottonwood Tree. (For more information and to register for the Author Series event, contact  Sandra [at] corraleslibrary.org).

The Public Works Department, after a difficult two weeks, has overcome the current problems with our STEP (Septic Tank Effluent Pumping) system. The Village will be working on improvements to the valves to make sure the system works better. In the meantime, kudos to Mike Chavez and his team!

Tuesday, August 10th, from 3-5, there will be a joint Council and Planning & Zoning work-study to discuss the proposed cannabis ordinance due to be approved on the 17th.  While the final state regulations are not done yet, interested parties can apply for licenses on September 1st, so municipalities must be ready with appropriate guidelines.

This weekend is the final chance for us armchair Olympians to cheer on the Tokyo games. Closer to home, check out https://visitcorrales.com/ for great Village photos and the scoop on local business. It’s the last weekend before school starts, so take advantage of the annual NM tax-free holiday. Or take the plunge before the Corrales Community Pool closes for the season. Visit the Corrales Growers’ Market on Sunday from 9-12. (Congrats on being a Reader’s Choice favorite.) While you are there, you can vote for the 2021 Pet Mayor! Whatever you do, stay safe and enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.
