Mayor's Message for December 2nd, 2022

Village hall decorated with lights for the holidays

Public Works staff, including Director Michael Chavez, Foreman Julian Trujillo, Maintenance Workers Danny Lovato and Steven Lesku decorated the outside of Village Hall this week with lights for the holidays. The Fire Department staff have hung lights at the main fire station and Parks and Rec Director Lynn Siverts and Maintenance Worker Ben Gonzales  hung lights at our Parks and Rec facilities in time for the Starlight Parade. The parade takes place tomorrow along Corrales Road from Wagner Farms to the Rec Center.  The parade will kick off at 5:30 pm and will be followed by a bonfire and other activities at 500 Jones Road.

A problem, identified by our first responders some time ago, was the lack of visible markers on houses or property. This makes it difficult to respond to an emergency at these locations. Some residents don’t care for the appearance of these markers, but they are necessary to protect everyone in our village. Markers identifying the street may also be inaccurate or lacking, in some cases, leading to delays in response. The address sign ordinance went into effect in March of this year with the adoption of the Chapter code revisions, 18-30 (c).

Addressing:

(1) Street numbers shall be assigned by the Planning and Zoning Department. Numbers other than those       designated as correct must be removed.

(2) Street numbers shall be legible and placed in plain view, where the property meets the street, and no less than 4 inches in height.

Village approved posts and signs are made by our Corrales Fire Department and can be purchased at the Village Hall Offices at 4324 Corrales Road. One-sided signs are $12.00, double-sided signs are $15.00 and wooden posts for the signs are $10.00. Signs do not have to be purchased from the Village, but they must meet the specifications set forth in the code. If you would like to purchase a sign from the Village, come see our wonderful receptionist Brigitte Scott at Village Hall to pay for the sign, then take your receipt to the main fire station, where staff will make the sign for you.

The repaving of Sagebrush Drive between Corrales Road and Loma Larga will begin Monday, December 5th and is expected to take approximately two weeks. Please seek an alternate route during this time.

WINTER ILLNESS UPDATE

Covid, Flu, RSV and many other viruses are impacting our state, and our hospitals are filling up with patients showing symptoms of one or more viruses at the same time. Our Fire Commander, Tanya Lattin, wants everyone to protect themselves and our community by following these guidelines:

  • Social Distance whenever possible
  • Wear Masks, inside public places and crowded outdoor areas
  • Get your Flu Shots and Covid Boosters
  • Wash Your Hands frequently
  • If you feel sick, stay home, and get tested or test yourself!

RSV, a common illness in children that can lead to hospitalization and even death, is a major concern this winter for older and immune compromised individuals, as well as very young children. What may be just a cold to you could be severe or deadly for someone with other health issues.  Our culture rewards the “working through an illness” mentality, but we encourage anyone who is feeling ill to STAY HOME to protect others in the community. Contact Tanya Lattin at 505-702-4182 if you need help with vaccines, treatment, or testing information. Early treatment is vital if you test positive.

Free home Covid test kits are still available while they last at the Village offices. Please consider testing yourself if you visit others or if others visit you during this holiday season to help keep everyone safe.

CRIME AND SAFETY UPDATE

The Corrales Police Department wants to remind everyone if you SEE IT, HEAR IT, REPORT IT!

With the Holiday Shopping Season upon us, please remember to never leave packages in unattended vehicles and if you shop online, keep these tips in mind to help thwart porch pirates:

  • If you’re home when deliveries are made, retrieve parcels right away.
  • If you’re not home during the day, have items shipped to your place of employment.
  • Require a signature for packages.
  • Use alternative delivery options such as a P.O. Box or parcel service locker.
  • Install and monitor security cameras, whether doorbell or otherwise.
  • Look out for each other in your neighborhoods and call CPD at 505-891-7226 to check out suspicious vehicles and/or individuals.

Stay warm and stay safe,

Jim Fahey
