Mayor's Message for December 30th, 2022

Happy New Year!

Another holiday season has passed. Please be safe with your New Year celebrations. Be sure to have a designated driver if there are plans for much celebration and revelry.

This next year may present some challenges for the municipal government. The new gym’s construction should start soon, with a groundbreaking ceremony on January 10th at 1:00pm. We may have a new look for the Administrative Complex, a new animal services facility, and maybe the Growers’ Market in a new area.

In a recent meeting with two of our legislators, Senator Brenda McKenna, and Representative Kathleen Cates, we expressed our desire to get funding for many items, but the #1 was a fire suppression system to deal with the fires that will probably occur in the Bosque. Given the history of the wildfires that have occurred recently we believe we have to protect our community from that kind of disaster.

A work study is planned before the next council meeting on January 10th, at 5:00pm to discuss some of the projects and to get an update on the ACE Center, formerly called the performing arts center.

We may also have some updates on the irrigation status for next season from the MRGCD. We hope we can soon reach an agreement with them to move forward on the interior drain project.

Purchase of the Gonzales property is still pending as we wait for all of the relatives to sign the appropriate documents.

Some discussions may center around possibly changing the time of our municipal elections by opting in to the general election so as to save the village some money and be consistent with other elections being held in November of the odd years.

On a lighter note, here are some of the events going on in January in the Village:

CRIME & SAFETY UPDATE:

On Monday 12/19 a resident of Cadillo Lane advised police that someone opened her mailbox the night before in an apparent attempt to steal her mail. Always retrieve incoming mail promptly, take outgoing items directly to the Post Office and consider getting a P.O. Box for added security.

Please celebrate New Year’s Eve responsibly and don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs or let someone you care about do so. In partnership with the Sandoval County DWI Task Force, CPD will have additional patrols out this holiday weekend and we wish everyone a peaceful 2023!

Thank you, have a safe week and remember: SEE IT, HEAR IT, REPORT IT!

As a reminder, FREE Covid home test kits are still available at Village Hall, Corrales Fire Station, and the Corrales Library. Please remember to wear a mask while shopping (especially in crowds), social distance, when possible, wash your hands frequently and stay home if you feel sick.

Why is it a tradition to eat black-eyed peas for the New Year? According to legendary Southern food researcher John Egerton, in history, black-eyed peas are associated with a "mystical and mythical power to bring good luck." Traditionally served with collard greens, which are green like money, the black-eyed peas represent coins, and a slice of cornbread represents gold and this interesting “Hoppin’ John” meal will ensure you a financially prosperous new year.

Many Corrales residents reported a light dusting of snow and icy conditions this week and according to the local weather stations, it looks like we may get some rain on Sunday and possibly snow on Monday! Current weather conditions and information can be monitored from the National Weather Service at: www.weather.gov

Stay safe, stay warm and best wishes for a healthy and Happy New Year!
