Mayor's Message for February 18th, 2022

Happy President's Day

February weather: temperatures rise into the 60’s and fall into the 20’s. It’s been up and down for sure. Sunny days have brought us the promise of spring but who doesn’t love a lovely morning of snow?

Presidents’ Day is Monday, February 21st. Started in 1885 to honor George Washington, the holiday now honors all past presidents. We can all agree it’s a tough job. Like many other federal holidays, Presidents’ Day always falls on a Monday, due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971, meant to increase the number of 3-day weekends! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Monday_Holiday_Act. Nonetheless, the Village Offices will remain open on Monday.

Early Voting continues through Friday, February 25th, 2022, at the office of the Village Clerk, 4324 Corrales Road, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday, February 26th, 2022 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Corrales is offering free COVID test kits! Go to the Recreation Center for drive through pick up today (Friday) from 2-4 pm and Sunday from 12-2 pm. Thank you Commander Lattin!

New Mexico has updated its Public Health Order. Masks are still required in health facilities and in schools if mandated by the school board (e.g., Albuquerque Public Schools and Rio Rancho School District no longer have mask mandates). Because the  number of COVID cases is still high in our community, the Village of Corrales encourages mask wearing inside public  facilities. The full text of the PHO can be found here: https://cv.nmhealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/021722-PHO-Masks.pdf

Come join the ribbon cutting celebration! The Thompson Fenceline Trail Connection is done, completing a loop 20 years in the making. Join us Friday, February 25th at 10 am. Location: west side of Loma Larga at the top of Sagebrush Drive.

Progress is being made on the long-awaited trail on the south side of Meadowlark Lane. This week was the final public zoom meeting with residents on the call. You will likely notice that stop signs have been put up and staking will begin soon. If you missed the meeting, you can watch the recording on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/WRV_ag4UCBI

Corrales Community Library Author Series presents Barbara Koltuska-Haskin, "How My Brain Works: A Guide to Understanding it Better and Keeping it Healthy"on Tuesday, February 22nd at 7 pm via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89643793552?pwd=Q3M4M3VBaHQvZGxka0lRbDN3NzdBQT09

The Corrales Historical Society is hosting a free Zoom lecture on Sunday at 2 pm entitled “When New Mexico was China.”  It’s a tantalizing look at early cartography. For more information and a special related preview, go to:  www.CorralesHistory.org and http://www.IFAresearch.org/amerasia/#

It’s the 20th Anniversary of the Village in a Village movement. More than 300 non-profit, volunteer organizations across the nation offer their communities programs and services to allow aging residents to stay in place. We are proud that Corrales ViV is one of these organizations. In the last seven years, ViV has grown from a concept to a viable organization of over 150 friends and neighbors. Learn more: https://www.villageinthevillage.org/.

The Nature Conservancy will be planting more than 25,000 willows at Harvey Jones  over the next several weeks.  Rio Grande Return is the contractor, with crew from Rio Grande Return, Ancestral Lands, TNC and volunteers.  The Nature Conservancy is closely coordinating with MRGCD and Corrales Fire Chief Martinez about willow storage and site access.

A shout out to Corrales resident Mark Mosher for his generous donation of a beautiful weight machine, with all the bells and whistles, for the new Recreation Center. Thank you so much for thinking of the community.

The New Mexico 2022 Legislative Session is over. This year, major legislation that has been sent to the Governor  includes both crime and tax reform. https://www.abqjournal.com/2471031/tax-cuts-crime-package-sent-to-governor.html/

The Village Council Meeting is next Tuesday February 22nd at 6:30 pm, via Zoom. As always the Agenda  and public packet will be available online today.
