Mayor's Message for February 24th, 2023

Rio Grande View

Progress is slow, but the administration is moving toward actually developing a comprehensive plan. We’ve had residents asking about the survey, which we had hoped to have released by now, but we’ve been working on a plan to streamline the overall process, which caused us to put a hold on sending out the survey. In the meantime, I would ask those who are interested in participating - a lot or a little – to contact their councilor and ask them to forward your contact information to our village clerk. Our clerk can also assist you in figuring out who your councilor is if you are unsure. By doing the committee selection process by districts, we hope to get a broader spectrum of what the citizens would like to see here in the future. The start of this process has been slow, but once we have determined the areas of focus and get the data, it should become more of a sprint. Be patient and realize we want to give as many people as possible a chance to contribute their thoughts and ideas to the process.

We are hoping to move forward on purchasing the new pre-fabricated Animal Services building soon. We have just completed the approval of the site development plan with some additional requirements as well as additional requests from the council. Our plan has been to place the structure in the present site used by Animal Services at the administration complex at 4324 Corrales Road. There is plenty of space, buffering from the surrounding residences, and has in fact been there for several years. Being centrally located with good visibility and signage, the facility will provide good care to animals.

The Art, Community, and Education (ACE) Center is moving forward. Designs are taking shape and there is a plan to provide a presentation to the village council either at a 2nd meeting in April or first meeting in May.

Our village clerk, Melanie Romero, has been working to get the Village Website updated and more user-friendly. New accessibility features have been added to the website, and can be accessed by clicking on the “purple person” figure in the bottom right corner of the homepage. By clicking on this icon, you can adjust settings such as the font size, curser size, and color adjustments for people with color-vision deficiencies. The website always has up-to-date information, including the weekly Mayor’s Message, Crime and Safety Reports, Event Calendar, Covid information, and road closures.

CRIME & SAFETY UPDATE:

At about 10:30AM on Wed. 2/15 police were advised of a suspicious couple in a U-Haul truck possibly casing residences on Calle de Blas. The male driver was observed to have a goatee and multiple arm and neck tattoos, and the female passenger was described as having long black hair. The couple fled from the area prior to the commission of any crime(s).

Wednesday, 2/15 a resident of Old Church RD reported discovering that his individual locking mailbox had been pried open and damaged, however, it is unknown whether or not any mail was stolen. Always retrieve mail promptly, take outgoing items directly to the Post Office, consider getting a P.O. Box for added security and visit the United States Postal Inspection Service web site for more information concerning mail theft: https://www.uspis.gov/tips-prevention/mail-theft

At about 2:00AM on Thursday 2/16 a resident of E. Ella reported that her front door had been pushed in and a television stolen from her kitchen, possibly by two acquaintances who were visiting her home earlier that night. The case is under investigation.

At approximately 1:30AM on Saturday, 2/18 residents of La Pasada De Anacleto reported that an apparently intoxicated neighbor had tried to enter their apartments mistaking them for his own and caused damage to several doors and windows in the process. Additional doors and windows belonging to neighboring businesses were also discovered to have been damaged later that morning. The 22-year-old male is subsequently being charged with Criminal Damage to Property and Disorderly Conduct.

Sunday 2/19 a citizen reported that someone had attempted to obtain a New Mexico MVD Identification Card, as well as applied for a car loan, via the fraudulent use of her personal information. The reporting party did not know how or when her data had been compromised. Remember to safeguard your personal / financial information both on paper and online, shred unneeded sensitive documents and visit the FTC web site for helpful information concerning identity theft: https://consumer.ftc.gov/identity-theft-and-online-security/identity-theft

Please call CPD at 505-891-7226 to report suspicious people / vehicles prowling around your neighborhood.

SEE IT, HEAR IT, REPORT IT!

COVID & FLU SEASON UPDATE:

Corrales is having another uptick in COVID. We’ve had 10 positive cases in the last three days which is almost 50% of all the cases for the entire month! Also, vomiting and diarrhea are very much on the uptick and most likely caused by the Norovirus. Hand sanitizer does not kill norovirus, hand washing is key, and norovirus can live on contaminated surfaces for weeks unless cleaned correctly.  You can get norovirus from touching contaminated surfaces, it only takes a small amount of virus to infect someone.  It is more difficult to kill than COVID.  It is also highly contagious. Recommendation is to clean surfaces with bleach and soapy water.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is updating its easy step-by-step guide to include information about reporting your over-the-counter (OTC) at-home COVID-19 test results. You can voluntarily and anonymously report your positive or negative test results every time you use an at-home COVID-19 test by going to MakeMyTestCount.org or by using an app or other digital option for self-reporting that may be included with your test. Alternately, you can report your home test with the State of New Mexico at www.nmnotify.comPlease report your test at only one of these sites.

This valuable test data helps public health departments know how fast the virus is spreading and helps them assess and modify their response to COVID-19 in their local communities, states, or across the country.

As a reminder, FREE Covid home test kits are still available at Village Hall, Corrales Fire Station, and the Corrales Library. Please remember to wear a mask indoors (especially in crowds), social distance, when possible, wash your hands frequently and stay home if you feel sick.

The FDA has increased and updated the shelf life of most home tests. To check the tests that you have, the FDA website can be found on the Village of Corrales website under COVID – 19 Resources.
