Mayor's Message for February 7th, 2020

new trees at old church

We continue our on-again, off-again relationship with winter. It’s snow, followed almost immediately by sunshine. Never a dull day and keeps you guessing as to the right things to wear. Layers!

The Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Commission worked hard to create a Trails Master Plan and you can now find it on our Village website. The commission continues to work to enhance trails and recreational opportunities for all of us. Thank you.

The Village thanks Court Koontz of Trees of Corrales for his generous donation of trees and also our hardworking Corrales Master gardeners for planting some of them at the Old Church property.

As explained at a Council Meeting last month, the Village does not recommend any change to our current slope ordinance. The Council is taking no further action on the item. Our difficult soils justify the 15% slope restriction which is in place to protect the community.

Early voting for the March 3 election has begun - it’s from 8 to 5 at the Village Offices. The machines can accommodate those with hearing or vision challenges. If you have any questions about voting, obtaining absentee ballots or anything else election-related, please call Shannon Fresquez, Village Clerk, at 897-0502, x 210. Sandoval County has determined that the election will be canvassed and certified on March 13, when the results will be official. Newly elected officials will assume their duties in April. Do keep checking the information on the Village website election page.

The New Mexico thirty-day legislative session has reached its midpoint. Although the 30-day session is traditionally restricted to budget issues, this year about 590 bills have been introduced. Most may not see action this year, but it does show great energy.

Next Tuesday at 6:30 is our Council Meeting. The Agenda and packet of public materials will be available this afternoon. On February 28, the Village hopes to have a 5:30 work study session about the Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) and how Corrales can take full advantage of this law. New bills would extend monies available to small municipalities for retail operations. This could be a great opportunity for us as we seek new entrepreneurs.

Road work update: Repaving will begin on Loma Large from Nicky Lane  to Camino Rayo Del Sol. Work will start on February 12 and is expected to finish on February 28th. During the project, Loma Larga will be down to one lane with a pilot car, so be prepared for some delays and seek alternate routes if possible.

This weekend you can enjoy the 2020 Friends and Lovers Balloon Rally. With luck, dozens of balloons will grace our Corrales skies. It’s family friendly, free and has a Valentine theme. It’s both Saturday and Sunday starting at 8 am. Balloon Fiesta Park. 5000 Balloon Fiesta Parkway.

Weather wise, we are expecting some beautiful days with temperatures in the high fifties. It’s a great time to get out there and enjoy a glimpse of spring. Whatever you do, enjoy it Corrales style.
