Mayor's Message for February 9th, 2024

Cranes Las Montoyas

In 2006 Corrales received the brunt of stormwater flows down the los Montoyas Arroyo. The flows were significant, but the problem was the silt build up under the Harvey Jones bridge. Rain was predicted for several more days and there only remained about 2 feet of clearance under the bridge for the water to flow because of the silt accumulation. The sides of the bridge were removed, and the road was closed with Jersey barriers to block the flow and prevent flooding in the Village. This allowed the stormwater to flow over the bridge. Subsequent to that emergency, SSCAFCA (the Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority) developed a plan to avoid that problem in the future. The Harvey Jones canal was reconfigured and the los Montoyas was re-engineered to allow for the silt to settle out and the flow to slow before reaching the Harvey Jones canal. Native plantings were placed in the los Montoyas and flood control structures were designed and built to mimic Mother Nature. It was hoped that all this would bring wildlife to the arroyo. SSCAFCA has been successful. Corraleños should take the opportunity to see the los Montoyas west of the Harvey Jones and perhaps see the sandhill cranes who are visiting. Sam Thompson, member of the Farmland Preservation and Agricultural Commission, reports there have been up to 100 cranes per day in the area.

The regular Village of Corrales Council Meeting will be held February 13 in the Council Chambers. Those who cannot attend can ZOOM in to watch. If you wish to speak, send an email to Melanie Romero (mromero [at] corrales-nm.org) before noon on the day of the meeting to let her know if you have a specific subject you wish to address or there is something the Council should know about that concerns you.

There are some great events this weekend you won’t want to miss. The jewelry sale by Friends of the Corrales Library is Saturday, February 10, at the San Ysidro Church, Hendren Hall, from 10 AM until 3 PM. Good deals are available at this sale. There will also be an open house at the Casa San Ysidro across from the Old Church on Saturday, 1 until 4 PM. Casa Perea, Pachamama, at 4829 Corrales Rd, will be hosting “Let’s Make Valentines” on Saturday from 1 until 3 PM. The Cottonwood School is having a Market on Sunday, February 11 from 10 AM until 2 PM featuring local food, artisans, raffles, and family friendly activities. You can find out more about these activities at the Corrales MainStreet website’s calendar.

Even with little or no development, some maintenance of the landscape is always necessary, especially when people live nearby. This past weekend the Bosque Advisory Commission, the Corrales Fire department, Public Works, and Village volunteers worked to remove dead and down trees in our bosque to decrease our fire risk. Great job to all those involved.
