Mayor's Message for January 19th, 2024

Corrales Elementary 2024

Plans are being developed by the Albuquerque Public School System to expand the Corrales Elementary School from K through 5th to K through 8th grade, up to about 500 students. The designs are being developed with the Village of Corrales in mind, that is, the history, the culture, and the environment and preserving all of those. We have asked APS officials to work with the Village and our Planning and Zoning Commission in a collaborative manner as this project moves forward to ensure that these criteria are upheld.  Based on limited conversations with APS, the Village is supportive of the goals planned for the expanded elementary school. Redistribution of the traffic throughout the campus will diminish the impact on Corrales Road from the increased student body. There will be larger buildings and some demolition will occur to older structures while new ones are being built. There is no date set for the start of construction at this time.

The MRGCD is planning an informational meeting in preparation for the next irrigation season. All Sandoval County farmers and irrigators are invited to attend the informational meeting being held on Monday, January 22 from 9 AM – 12 PM at the Martha Liebert Public Library, 124 Calle Malinche, Bernalillo. This meeting is open to the public. A presentation from MRGCD officials will start at 9 AM followed by an open question and answer session. You can visit the MRGCD website for more information on this meeting and other upcoming projects at www.mrgcd.com.

If you are a little blue from the cold weather, watch for the seed catalogs. They seem to arrive daily now. Gets me all fired up for spring…like it’s tomorrow. No such luck, but you can plan and when the soil is workable there are some things that can be planted outside. Check with the vendors at the Growers’ Market, the county extension service or Master Gardeners as to what can be started, when and where. The Sandoval County Extension Service provides a monthly newsletter with helpful pearls and information, education programs, and other sources to assist you in your growing. http://sandovalmastergardeners.org/.

Thinking of Spring – Village Mercantile will be having a Chick and Duck presentation by flock expert Kacha Hedrick on Sunday, January 28th at 5 PM. Seating is limited, and you must call to reserve yours – 505-897-9328.

As we age, we occasionally need assistance. Village in the Village was organized a few years ago to allow Corraleños to age in place. A 501 (c) 3 non-profit was formed. Their mission is to help members fulfill their desire to age well in their homes in Corrales and stay connected to the community. Member volunteers make this possible by helping in many areas:

    • Companionship visits in your home,
    • Transportation,
    • Maintenance and support services,
    • Technical support, which most of us need.

There are also a variety of member events during the year. Contact Village in the Village, 505-274-6206 for more information or visit them online at www.VillageintheVillage.org.

Kudos to the Corraleños who are members of the Bosque Amateur Radio Club who made the Albuquerque Journal this week. Their group is providing radios to Ukraine through Care4Ukraine.org to help with communications on the battlefield in Ukraine. I imagine they would appreciate any donations toward equipment.

CRIME AND SAFETY UPDATE

We hope that everyone had a peaceful Martin Luther King Day.

At about 8:00AM on Wed. 01/10 a subject who was stopped for speeding (51 mph in a 30 mph zone) on Loma Larga near Olguin RD was found to have an outstanding Rio Rancho Municipal Court bench warrant for Failure to Appear regarding a Stop Sign violation. The 59-year-old Corrales resident was cited for speeding and not having his drivers license in his possession, then booked into the Sandoval County Detention Center on the outstanding warrant.

On Sun. 01/14 a 19-year-old male resident reported transferring funds to prevent compromising photos of himself from being disseminated via social media. Sextortion can impact both juveniles and adults. Be sure to warn your children about these crimes and instruct them not to take or share sensitive photos of themselves. More information about sextortion can be found at the FBI website: https://www.fbi.gov/video-repository/newss-what-is-sextortion/view

Thank you, have a safe week and remember:

SEE IT, HEAR IT, REPORT IT!

HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE

New Mexico is one of only 4 states with the highest of the high for respiratory virus activity, with the Albuquerque Metro area having the largest portion of illness reported. To be treated with Paxlovid for COVID, the medication must be started within the first 5-days of illness.  While home tests are good, it can take 3- 4 days of symptoms for them to detect a positive COVID. If you are at high risk of severe COVID and have symptoms you should test at least test 2 times 48 hours apart.    For more information on testing https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/testing.html

Free COVID test kits are still available at Village all in the Foyer, the Corrales Fire department (call 505-898-7501 and we will bring them out to you), and the Corrales Library.
