Mayor's Message for January 24th 2020

John Hancock Signature

As we head into the last week of January, we are seeing our blue skies again. Predictions are for temps in the 50’s this weekend.

John Hancock was born this week and thus National Handwriting Day. Advocates say handwriting improves fine motor skills, literacy and cognitive development, reading comprehension and knowledge retention and combats dyslexia and jangled nerves. OK, but typing means no decoding chicken scratches masquerading as handwriting.

Do you have a great idea to help children in Corrales? The Kiwanis Club of Corrales is offering grant monies for projects that will benefit Corrales children and our community. Check out the Kiwanis website for details and an application (https://kiwanis-corrales.org).The deadline is March 31, 2020.

Locally, it seems quiet, but on the state level, the 30-day Legislative Session is off and running. The Village has been in regular contact with our legislators and will continue to do so. There are a lot of issues on the Governor’s call and plenty of political analysis in the news.

Closer to home, this Sunday Corrales Historical Society presents Carl Malone, State Historian for the New Mexico Mayflower Society. Mr. Malone promises to reveal the real history of the Pilgrims. Free. 2 pm at 977 Old Church Road.

Tammy Meyer, Supervisor of the Corrales Senior Center, is now certified through the NM Health Department to teach self-management health classes. Congratulations Tammy! She and Patricia Corriz will offer classes on the Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP type 2). The class will meet every Thursday April 2 through May 7, from 8:30-11:00 am. at the Corrales Community Center. It’s open to the public and you do not have to be a senior. Call 505-897-3818 for details.

The Village Council meets next Tuesday at 6:30 pm. The Agenda and public packet materials will be available on the Village website later today. As you know, there are 2 bond questions up for your consideration. The Village bond attorney will speak about the type of infrastructure projects that will be funded if the questions pass in March.

More sun; less mud! Sounds like time to get outdoors this weekend. Whatever you do, please enjoy yourself Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake, Mayor of Corrales
