Mayor's Message for January 7th, 2022

Corrales and Sandias

January may be crisp and clear but, like many, I get a tinge of the January Blues. This article highlights good things about the first month of the year. Enjoy! https://medium.com/@vtutor/why-january-is-actually-the-best-month-of-the-year-f90e0fedba1

This holiday season, the Village, through your generous donations and the coordinating efforts of CFD, distributed food and toys to 37 families, including 61 children, for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Each family received holiday meals and extra food for their pantry with fresh fruit and vegetables. Every child received items they needed such as clothing, socks, underwear, shoes, books, stockings, and wishlist items. Every family received blankets, and any family in need of decorations and Christmas trees received those as well. Thank you to the many Corraleños who donated money, purchased items, or wrapped gifts. Bravo!

We all know COVID is rampant and Omicron is sweeping our state, including Corrales. The guidance is just plain confusing. But this is clear: if you are vaccinated and boosted you will overwhelmingly get a mild case. If you are not vaccinated you will get sicker, require hospitalization more often, and you even risk death. What a pointless waste of life. Support Corrales: get vaccinated and boosted! Upgrade your mask to K95 or N95 and be situationally aware. The New Mexico Department of Health has provided updated guidance at cv.nmhealth.org

Here is a more extensive report from Corrales Fire Commander, Tanya Lattin:

COVID cases are climbing in the US, New Mexico and Corrales. This month will see increasing cases, but we can get through it by thinking of others and being as safe as possible especially around those most at risk: the elderly, very young and immunocompromised. If you are having symptoms of illness please stay home and help prevent spread, even if you can’t find a test quickly. If you are over 64 or have underlying health conditions you may qualify for monoclonal antibody or oral treatments. The Village website has an extensive list of testing providers for both free and paid testing along with information on available treatments and how you can access those treatments. Vaccination is the best way to prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death. Receiving your booster increases your protection. The State has now approved boosters for children 12 to 15. Corrales will continue to have vaccinations in the Village. Other ways to protect yourself and others is to wear a good mask (KN95 or N95) when out in a crowd or inside a building. People who have home tests are asked to report their positive results through nmnotify.com, a confidential mobile application that will notify persons you have been in contact with for 15 minutes or more for a period of two days prior to your positive test.  It does not share who is COVID positive, it only gives an alert on their phone if they have activated exposure notifications. If you receive a contact alert, you need to follow State and CDC guidelines based on your symptoms and or vaccination status.  Anyone needing assistance with COVID related issues can reach out to me, Tanya Lattin, at (505) 702-4182.

Loma Larga repaving! From January 10 through 21st, road work will be taking place on Loma Larga from Camino Rayo del Sol to Camino Todos Los Santos. Thanks for your patience and plan for delays due to lane closures during this time. (fyi: get alerts sent directly to your email by contacting Village Clerk Melanie Romero at mromero [at] corrales-nm.org).

March elections are coming up and a number of residents have signed up to run for Mayor and open Council positions. For a complete list of candidates.

At the Special Council Meeting on Tuesday night, the Village Council amended the cannabis ordinance. Read it.

Tuesday, January 11, at 6:30 pm, join our first regularly scheduled Council meeting of 2022. You can find the Agenda and public packet online, along with zoom instructions . Among other items, there will be 2 citizen presentations: one regarding senior housing by Village in a Village and another about proposed improvements to La Entrada Park from FOCL (Friends of the Corrales Library). Be in the know!

I want to thank all of you for continuing to hang tough in these tough times. A special shout out to the employees who continue to work tirelessly on your behalf. Due to the incredible spike in cases, the majority of our employees are working remotely, so please reach out telephonically for service. Thank you for your understanding.

This weekend, expect mostly sunny days with frigid mornings and warmer afternoons (50’s). Good weather to bundle up and take a walk, bike or ride our trails. Check out visitcorrales.com to see what’s happening on the local business scene. But please, whatever you do, stay safe and enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.
