Mayor's Message for January 8th, 2021

Unicorn Cops

January has brought us cold and clear weather. It is beautiful in its spare way and every day is a little longer and a little lighter. Let’s hope that is a metaphor for 2021 in general.

As promised last week, I am including a link to a report highlighting Village accomplishments in 2020 and some goals for 2021. Please follow this link to read what’s been happening and what’s hoped for in 2021. I am optimistic that 2021 will be a productive year. Our community is strong and the next months will bring us to a “more normal ”condition with increased recreational opportunities and vaccines. It can be hard to wait this isolating period out, but I want to thank you for your commitment to your community and to each other.

The vaccination roll-out in Sandoval County is ongoing. Please register with the state; if you have done so but did not receive a code, you need to go back and get one to complete your profile (cvvaccine.nmhealth.org). You can also call for questions related to the vaccine: at 1-855-600-3453. The next COVID-19 update will occur on January 13 – it will be a chance to see how well our state and county are doing.

Two police officers from the Corrales Police Department deserve special recognition for going above and beyond. When a local mom’s wallet was stolen on her daughter’s birthday, crushing celebration plans, Officers Trujillo and Pohl came to the rescue. They helped complete the necessary report, but they also returned with a decorated cake and a stuffed unicorn for the birthday girl. The mother’s thank-you letter was truly beautiful.

Also, our Animal Control Officers Kathrine Keller and Bryah Lattin-Montano have received several shout-outs for all their recent help and care towards our citizens’ animals.

Many thanks to citizen and ornithologist Janet Ruth for her beautiful annotated bird list and photos. Thanks to the Bosque Commission for helping add the link to our web, which increases the ways our citizens can enjoy the richness of our local habitat.

The Corrales Village Council will be meeting via zoom next Tuesday at 6:30. Our state legislators Senator Brenda McKenna and Representatives Jane Powdrell-Culbert and Daymon Ely should be joining us to discuss the upcoming legislative session. My appointment to fill the unexpired term of District 4 Councilor will be placed before the Council for confirmation. I wish to thank the numerous residents of District 4 who stepped up and applied for the job. I am grateful for their willingness to serve Corrales and look forward to their continued community support in the future. There will be a Local Heroes recognition for Team Builders. The Agenda and public packet of materials, along with the information needed for citizens to join, will be available this afternoon.

Looks like we are in for some windy weather. Get out there while you can. Whatever you are doing, please enjoy yourselves this weekend, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
