Mayor's Message for July 10th, 2020

Corn Field with View of Sandias

HOT! HOT! HOT! The next few days will see record high temperatures. Please - take preventive measures. Make sure you and your animals are well-hydrated, enjoy your outdoor activities early in the day and remember fire danger is extremely high.

July 15 is the due date for filing New Mexico personal and corporate income tax returns. Payments may be delayed but you’ve got to file your returns by July 15. For full details, check updated tax Bulletin 100.35, available in the “Forms and Publications” section.

We have a frightening spike in COVID 19 cases here in New Mexico, especially among people ages 20-39. Even here in Corrales cases are going up. Tragically, family gatherings, backyard barbecues and undisclosed travel can kill. Commander Lattin has prepared helpful graphic data, including information about cases in zip codes where Corraleños often shop and work. PDFs and a picture with this information can be found below. It will also be posted  our COVID-19 Resources page later today.

Unsurprisingly, there’s a new more restrictive health order. Masks are required at all times when you are out of your house and there are no longer any exceptions. Enforcement will be stepped up. Indoor dining is once again prohibited, although patio dining is allowed at 50% occupancy, as is curbside pick-up and delivery. State parks are open to New Mexico residents only. For the full order visit website ,  or visit . New Mexicans have about 5 weeks to show we can get ahead of the virus, get our children back to school and maybe even enjoy some fall sports.

The ability to reverse this deadly uptick does not depend on the government; it depends on us. Wearing a mask is the best option we have right now. So, as I have been saying and will continue to say, if you truly care about supporting businesses, your loved ones, your friends, neighbors and your own life, please wear a mask. Think of it this way: it’s a small change in behavior much like not smoking in restaurants, wearing a seat belt or using an infant seat, actions once considered controversial but now the norm. There’s no dispute - if we all do this, it will save thousands of lives. No one will think less of you; in fact, we’re depending on you to save our lives. Here’s what each of us can do to show care for our country and each other: 1) stay home whenever possible, 2) social distance, 3) wear a mask (and ask others to do so), 4) avoid large crowds, closed and crowded spaces and 5) wash your hands. Thank you.

Why not celebrate Bastille Day (July 14th) with croissants or a French baguette from the Corrales Growers’ Market, Sunday, 9-12? Finally, thanks to each and every one of you who are doing your best to stay safe and follow the directives. I’m proud of this Village. As we stand strong and united, we will win our fight against COVID19, Corrales-style.
