Mayor's Message for July 30th, 2021

road

The last days of July are here, promising to bring thunder, lightning, and rain.  As we move into August, it’s time to enjoy local tomatoes, basil and shishito peppers.

Corrales repaving 448 project is complete! We’ve got a smoother surface and no potholes. New crosswalk and crossing markings will be put down by the end of the year, after extensive work by Public Works Director Michael Chavez and help from local commissioners Chris Allen and Susan Zimmerman. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.

More good news – the first portion of the American Rescue Act funds have arrived (about 1.1 million) and are safely deposited in the bank. These monies must be spent on authorized infrastructure projects by 2026. Village staff are now drilling down on the rules and regulations, so we get it right.

What a storm we had last Friday afternoon! Many Villagers noted the quick response by Public Works, Fire and Police Departments as they worked to remove mud and earth from the roads. For more information on what you can do to protect your property or contact Planning and Zoning Director Laurie Stout at 505-897-0502x219 or lstout [at] corrales-nm.org.

COVID-19 is surging; it’s a pandemic among the unvaccinated. The large increase in cases and the extreme transmissibility of the Delta variant means a new public health order requires everyone, vaccinated or not, to wear a mask indoors in counties of substantial risk – and that includes Sandoval and Bernalillo Counties. Masks are now required inside all Corrales municipal buildings. Albuquerque School District requires indoor masking, due to real risk for children. The federal government is mandating vaccination for employees, as are many private companies. Wear a mask indoors and get vaccinated. Do your part. No one wants to go back.

This weekend be on the lookout for storms, but don’t let that stop you from having some outdoor fun. The Tokyo Olympics have been dramatic: skateboarding and swimming, anyone? Welcome the arrival of August with a cool beverage and some local shopping. Don’t forget the Corrales Growers’ Market on Sunday from 9-12. Whatever you do, please stay safe and enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.

Mayor of Corrales
