Mayor's Message for July 8th, 2022

4th of July Parade

We have just celebrated our country’s birthday. It was great having a parade after 2 years of not having a celebration. How did everyone like the water fight venue? Let us know. I think Parks and Recreation Director Lynn Siverts did an excellent job putting it all together. Many volunteers made this happen, not to mention the efforts of our wonderful police force. What about all those fire trucks? My grandson thought it was great!

The council is already starting to plan our funding requests for the next legislative session. We are hoping to obtain funding for several projects for fiscal year 2024. These requests will go to our legislature for the 2023 session in January.

Last week, the New Mexico Economic Development Department released the county-level economic summaries. There has been broad expansion economically across the state, with 30 of 33 counties in New Mexico showing gains in Matched Taxable Gross Receipts (MTGR).  Sandoval county was up 44% this past year. The Village of Corrales has seen gains similar to that of the County, which may mean the Village will have extra funds to complete some on-going projects.  Our finance director, Reyna Aragon, will have more information as all the end of the fiscal year reports are completed, and the Village Council will be apprised of what is available for project fundingResidents who are curious can keep an eye on upcoming Village Council agenda items by going to the Village website and clicking on the “I’m Looking For” tab on the right side of the home page, then clicking “Agendas/Minutes”. There you can find a list of all the meetings of the Village Council (as well as all the official commissions), and can download copies of agendas and minutes from those meetings.

Plans are being made to avoid the problems with irrigation that we have had this season. Plans will provide a short term answer as well as long term mitigation. Our goal is to provide water for farming even if the drought continues for some time to come. We will need to focus on other sources of water that might be considered unusual such as treated sewage although that volume would only be a drop in the bucket when compared to what we need.

The next Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD) Board of Directors meeting will be Monday, July 11, 2022 as a hybrid  Meeting at 3:00 p.m. There will be an opportunity for the community to comment on the on-going water issues here in the Village. Meeting URL: https://www.anymeeting.com/068-797-673
Optional Dial-In Number: +1(716)273-1030 PIN: 068-797-673# more information can be found on their website at https://www.mrgcd.com/

Given the political climate in the country today, it is important for all of us to register to vote and then vote. It is our responsibility as citizens of this country to preserve our government. It all starts at the local level. You can register to vote online on the Secretary of State's website herehttps://portal.sos.state.nm.us/OVR/WebPages/InstructionsStep1.aspx

For those who have some open land that they cannot maintain nor wish to maintain, there may be some help from Village in the Village. They have identified some individuals available to work. Some of those individuals may be interested in farming your land. Call ViV (Village in the Village) for more information at 505-274-6206.

ViV will be hosting a fundraiser through Chipotle at 3400 Hwy 528 on Wednesday, July 13th from 4 - 8 PM. 33% of sales will be donated to Village in the Village if you show the flyer (see the bottom of the message) when you order in person, or by entering code AL7FQXJ for an online order.

Public Works will be doing road maintenance on Loma Larga, weather permitting, on Tuesday, July 12, from Carey Road to Todos Los Santos. Expect lane closures and delays throughout the day on Tuesday.
