Mayor's Message for July 9th, 2021

Gonzales Field with Sandias

Temperatures are hot but we did get some rain. I was too optimistic – cotton is still flying. Fire danger remains high so please take precautions.

Support the Corrales Fire Department! 1) purchase a great hanging planter made from repurposed fire boots or fire helmets at the CFD, and 2) help John Perea shed his pandemic length hair! Purchase tickets at Perea’s Restaurant, the Village Mercantile or Ex Novo Brewery and then go to Perea’s Restaurant (aka the Tijuana Bar) at 2:00 p.m. on July 17th for the drawing! (4590 Corrales Road). All proceeds benefit the Corrales Fire Department.

The Corrales Police Department remodel is complete! CPD is pleased with the freshly updated offices and facilities. Well deserved. Congratulations! Next up – the Village is working on a newly remodeled municipal parking lot. Safety and liability issues required removal of some trees, but new ones will be planted. The finished project will provide a much safer, more compliant and better-looking parking area.

The Corrales Community Pool was featured on Channel 7 news this week.  Our pool is always rated one of the best in the state. Way to go, Lynn! Check it out, 12:30-5:30, 7 days a week.

The FOCL book sale was a huge success. Many happy shoppers and many fewer books. Thanks to all the FOCL volunteers who put in so much time and effort.

Corrales got a surprise visit from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on the 4th of July. Word is she had a great time. Of course. It’s Corrales.

Attention history lovers. Supplied by Debbie Clemente of Corrales Historical Society, here is a great listing of this month’s events from around the state (https://www.albuqhistsoc.org/history-opportunities/july-2021-online-in-person-new-mexico-history-culture-opportunities/).

Cannabis is now legal in New Mexico. State law forbids treating a cannabis business differently from any other similarly situated business, but does allow local regulations that consider time, place and manner, the same as for any other legal enterprise. However, to be most effective, local ordinances must be passed by September 1st, so the Village Administration is working hard to present a draft ordinance to the Council at the July 20th meeting.

Good progress this week on the Corrales Road repaving project. Work is completed in the northbound lane up to Valverde Road and in the southbound lane to Sagebrush Drive. Thank you for obeying traffic control instructions. Please don’t try and pass on the right; it’s dangerous and illegal. Fair warning – if you get caught, it’s a costly ticket! The repaving company may be working longer hours to meet the goal of paving one mile a day. So, when in doubt, stick to your alternate route.

This weekend may well bring thunderstorms and more rain. But still expect lots of time to have fun in the summer sun. Pick up something at the Corrales Growers’ Market on Sunday from 9-12. Whatever you do, enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
