Mayor's Message for June 12th, 2020

New Pickleball Courts

June weather is upon  us. We are having some rain (perhaps even today and tomorrow), but it is hot and windy, so take care and be especially careful about fire danger. You can always check the Fire Department page on the Village website for more information,

This week Corrales Fire Department Commander Tanya Lattin was the featured speaker for the Village in a Village Discovery Series. She was able to give lots of information to the group on the current public health orders and best practices for being safe in our COVID-19 world. Thank you Commander Lattin. Refer to https://www.corrales-nm.org/fire/page/covid-19-resources-health-and-res… for more information.

U.S. Representative Ben Ray Lujan spoke to New Mexico Mayors about his efforts to secure federal assistance to address state and local fiscal gaps caused by the pandemic. There’s lots at stake, including gaining the flexibility to allow revenue replacement, extending the Payroll Protection Act and ensuring fair monetary distributions to municipalities. If successful, these measures will be very helpful to New Mexico when our legislature meets in special session next week to address the state budget shortfall.

On a more recreational note, this week two community volunteers, John McCandless and Joel Horn, re-striped one of our outdoor pickle ball courts and it now looks brand new. Kudos!

Lynn Siverts, our creative Head of Parks and Recreation, has found a way to open up a few  lap lanes and offer limited swim lessons, all while following the state health directives. For details, go to https://www.corrales-nm.org/parksrec. Lynn is very happy to be able to offer these services.

Corrales continues to open slowly. Breweries are now open at 50%, great news for Ex Novo and Casa Vieja. You can also visit our newest business, Corrales Teas & More, at 3923 Corrales Road. For more information about our businesses and their opening schedules, go to https://www.visitcorrales.com. They want and need your business; just stay safe out there and follow the rules we all know by heart.

Read Joan Hashimoto’s informative Commentary in the June 6th issue of the Corrales Comment. Chairperson of the Corrales Bosque Advisory Commission, Joan reminds us about this wonderful resource and our need to protect it.

Join the virtual Corrales Council meeting next Tuesday at 6:30. The Agenda and public packet will be posted today. There is a call-in number at the top of the Agenda and citizens who wish to be part of the Corraleños Forum should send written comments to agjullin [at] corrales-nm.org by noon on Tuesday and they will be read into the record.

The Village is planning a safe and fun 4th of July celebration. It’s true it can’t be like the past, not this year anyway, but we can have fanfare, make some noise and enjoy ourselves. Stay tuned for details.

On Sunday morning, from 9-12, check out the Corrales Growers’ Market. You might take advantage of our cool early mornings; but whatever you do, enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.
