Mayor's Message for June 19th, 2020

Fire Helmet Planter

As we move through June, our beautiful blue skies are fouled by smoke from an Arizona fire. The air quality is poor, so be careful about going out. It is also hot and dry, so fire danger remains high.

Today is Juneteenth, commemorating June 19th, 1865, two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, when Union Soldiers landed in Galveston Texas. They told enslaved people there, who were the last to know, that they had been freed and that the Civil War was over. Juneteenth is a state holiday, special day of observance or ceremony in 48 states, including New Mexico.

At the Tuesday council meeting, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission received overwhelming support for the plan to complete the Thompson Fence Line Trail connection. The Village is committed to making this long-standing project a reality. See the presentation.

Several of our Corrales photographers have been included in the 2020 ANMPAS show. Congratulations to Lawrence Blank, Ken Duckert, and Diana Kelleher. You can see the stunning virtual Gallery at: www.anmpas.com Congratulations.

Kiwanis presented $2,000 to the Corrales Fire Department to help buy food for our firefighters at the station. Thank you Kiwanis. Have you seen the hanging planters adorning the fire station’s portal? Those are repurposed fire helmets painted and planted by local volunteers like Sam Thompson & Margie's Nursery. Drop by the station to buy your very own. All proceeds go to the Corrales Fire Department.

A big shout out to our local Master Gardeners for tackling the planted areas around the administrative buildings. It looks lovely and is much appreciated.

Speaking of “normal”- the current reality is that we need to wear masks.  Corrales may be ahead of the curve on this one, but our Emergency Manager, Commander Tanya Lattin, has been asked to remind us all. If we want to keep our COVID-19 number low and stay safe, wearing a mask in public is a must.

Corrales is cooler - right? Well, COVID-19 may have canceled our traditional 4th of July Parade, but we can still have a “Corrales Cruise By” on the morning of the fourth. Registered vehicles will follow the same route as the 2020 Graduates Parade ( Coronado to Loma Larga to West Ella). There will be plenty of room along the sides of the roads for vehicle spectators to park. Let's show Corrales creativity and positive community spirit as we celebrate the 4th of July. Want to be in the “Corrales Cruise By”? for registration details. As Lynn Siverts, head of Parks and Recreation says, “let's just have an hour of much-needed FUN.”

Speaking of Parks and Recreation, our Corrales pool has a limited opening that has lap swim and swim lessons available. Lap swim is from 8am-6pm on weekdays and from 12pm-3pm on weekends. Just call ahead to make sure a slot is available, (505) 899-8900. They are also offering Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 swim lessons starting today! If you have any questions, again, call (505) 899-8900 or email lsiverts [at] corrales-nm.org. Registration can be found at https://campscui.active.com/orgs/VillageofCorrales.

This Sunday is Father's Day! Don't forget to celebrate the father or father figures in your life. Also, the Corrales Growers Market will be open from 9 to 12. CGM is doing a great job of keeping the market open and safe. It is going to be hot this weekend so whatever you do, stay cool, Corrales-style.
