Mayor's Message for June 25th, 2021

La Entrada Refurbished Benches

The heat wave continued this week and was complicated by hazy conditions that can cause respiratory problems. Especially if you have asthma, allergies or bronchial issues, please check an air quality index and take appropriate safeguards (https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/corrales/87048/air-quality-index/2233686).

New Mexico surely has a 60% vaccination rate by now and is certainly among the states having more than half its population fully immunized. Good for us!  In July, we look forward to a new less restrictive public health order (PHO), but right now the current PHO remains in place (https://cv.nmhealth.org/public-health-orders-and-executive-orders/). Stay safe and take care of yourselves and others. And if you haven’t done so already, please get vaccinated! Protect yourself against the Delta variant, which is causing a 20% surge in states with low vaccination rates.

So, despite the good news, Corrales will not be able to have a 4th of July parade this year. Frankly, it’s still unclear what would be allowable from a public health standpoint. For example, the state permit necessary to use the highway has been unavailable. The 448 construction has caused further disruption and uncertainty. The critical fire, heat and drought conditions have made first responder participation unlikely. Finally, but not least, Village personnel resources have been stretched razor thin and if you are feeling fatigued, so are they. Altogether, it’s just not feasible. Corrales will have a wonderful parade in 2022! This year will bring the Harvest Festival in September, a 50th Anniversary celebration and the Twinkle Light Parade in December. Thank you for understanding.

Don’t forget FOCL’s free in-person book sale on July 3rd and 4th, 9 am to 5 pm in La Entrada Park (https://friendsofthecorraleslibrary.wildapricot.org/page-18173) or CAC’s virtual house tour on Sunday June 27 at 3 pm. For more information on the house tour and ticket prices, call 505-508-5074 or visit https://www.corralesartscenter.org

448 repaving update. As of June 24, repaving is complete in the northbound lane up to the Post Office and on the southbound lane up to Meadowlark. Equipment problems once again slowed progress, but they are working full speed again. As the project reaches our Village center, please take an extra moment to plan out your alternate routes.

Speaking of equipment failures, many of you spotted another mobile home on the ditch near Loma Larga. Please, no, this is not a new Village trend! As the mobile home was being taken away, the towing hitch failed. After being fixed, the mobile home safely exited the Village.

Kudos to Corrales Cub Scout Pack No. 702! They (and perhaps their parents?) rehabbed and replaced park benches throughout La Entrada Park. They look great. Go over and enjoy a quiet moment sitting under the trees. While you are there, check out the beautiful pollinator garden planted by the Master Gardeners on the east side of the Corrales Community Library. Thank you all for making the park so lovely.

This weekend, we are being promised cooler temperatures and better air quality. Great time to get out and enjoy our Village. Don’t forget to visit the Corrales Growers’ Market on Sunday from 9-12. Whatever you do, please be safe and enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.
