Mayor's Message for June 2nd, 2023

Corrales Tractor and Car Show Flyer

This weekend promises to be another very active one in the Village if the weather allows. We have the Corrales Tractor Club Annual Antique Tractor & Car Show on the Rec Center soccer field on Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM, featuring not only the tractors, but also engines, farm equipment, vintage cars and live music! It’s all FREE, except for the food. Food trucks will be in the Growers’ Market parking lot. All proceeds will go to the UNM Childrens Hospital.

Don’t forget the Growers’ Market on Sunday from 9 AM until 12 noon. The season is beginning to take off, and increasing varieties of fresh produce will be available. Get some ideas from the Master Gardeners on planting because there is still time to get your own garden in. There is the Seed Library in the Corrales Library that can help with starting up from seed. You can check it out when you visit the library on Saturday and/or Sunday between 9 AM and 4 PM for the Spring Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Corrales Library. The very popular $5 fill a bag sale will be Sunday from 3-4 PM. Bags are provided. All proceeds from the book sale will go directly to our library. While visiting the library you can also visit the Children’s ‘Story Book’ Garden supervised by our own Master Gardener’s.

Sunday activities also include the annual Corrales Garden Tour focusing on a variety of gardens at residences throughout the Village. Tickets are available at the Village Mercantile and Frontier Mart. Parking to see the gardens is always an issue, so it is best to carpool if possible. Mainstreet’s First Sunday Arts in the Village is also June 4 starting at 10 AM at various sites in the Village.

The Rio Grande River is still running fast and deep. Unless experienced, one would be advised not to plan any kayaking or canoeing at this time on our stretch of the river. Our firefighters and police are monitoring the situation at the siphon because there have been many rescues required in the last couple of weeks. Be careful recreating near the river as well – the high-water levels have made the riverbanks unstable, so you could have an unplanned swim in the river if you aren’t careful and remember, life jackets are required.

This provides a segue into water related problems at the pool. Manganese in our water is causing the pool to be too dark to allow swimmers in the deeper part of the pool. Hopefully by the time you read this, it will be treated and managed the way Lynn Siverts does it year after year…Great!

On June 13th, the Village Council will be voting on whether or not to opt-in to the November regular local election cycle. Currently, Corraleños vote for their Mayor, Council members, and Judge in March of even years. Opting in to the November election cycle would move those elections to November of odd years. The council wants to hear your opinions on this matter. Please email the Village Clerk, Melanie Romero, at mromero [at] corrales-nm.org (), or your council member directly with your thoughts. You are also welcome to attend the regular council meeting on June 13th at 6:30 pm in the Council Chambers to let the Council know what you think.

Mark your calendars! The Village will be hosting a vehicle and surplus equipment auction on July 7th from 10 AM to 2 PM. This will be a sealed bid auction, and forms can be picked up from the Village Administration office or downloaded from the website. Items must be picked up by July 10th at 2 PM.

There are still speeding issues throughout the village. Please help us lead by example by following the posted speed limit signs. Remember the old Corrales sign that said, “Drive slow, see our Village. Drive fast, see our Judge”.

School is officially out for the Summer! One way to keep those kiddos busy is by signing up for the Corrales Library Summer Reading Program which begins Monday, June 5th. Sign-up in person at the library at 84 West La Entrada Road or register online at: https://corraleslibrary.beanstack.com/reader365. The library has lots of fun things planned for the Summer including movie days, craft days, teen stitch club, chess club, story time and music in the park. There is definitely something for everyone! For more information please see the library newsletter.

CRIME & SAFETY UPDATE:

Wednesday 5/24, police responded at 2130 hours to the Siphon gate where a female who was kayaking on the Rio Grande River, fell off and was stuck in the middle of the river hanging onto a branch. Officers walked down to the river’s edge and in the distance, we were able to see a light in the water south of our location.  Officers waited for Corrales Fire Department to arrive and directed them to the area where they could see the light. Corrales Fire Department was able to rescue the female from water who had a life jacket on the female was treated with no apparent injuries.

Thursday 5/25, a Corrales resident reported unemployment fraud. He stated he had received a letter from the New Mexico Department of Workforce on May 4, 2023. The Letter referred to a claim made by him for unemployment asking for further identification. He further stated he had never made such a claim and that he is currently employed. He has no knowledge of how his personal identity was obtained and used. A report was made by the Officer for Workforce solutions. More information about identity theft and unemployment fraud and what you can do to protect yourself can be found at: https://www.dws.state.nm.us/IdentityTheft

Saturday 5/27, a Corrales Police Officer was flagged down on Applewood just before Corrales Road.  The male stated he found a wallet on the road just before the ditch bank on Applewood. The wallet was checked by CPD and it contained a New Mexico Provisional license to Lucia Bella Rodriguez, Visa debit card, a Presbyterian medical card, two photos of young boy and three quarters (.75 cents). HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE:

It is recommended that you have the “what3words” app on your phone to help locate you if you run into an emergency while hiking, camping, or using the river. Please go to: https://what3words.com/ for more information.

The wildfire season is upon us and even with the current rain we have experienced, there is still fire danger! Information is available.

The Corrales Fire Department is still holding vaccine drive-through clinics and registration is available by going to:  https://goodtimes.vaccinenm.org/stay-ahead-nm/  Please call Fire Commander, Tanya Lattin at 505-702-4182 with any questions or if you need assistance with registration.

With the added moisture we have had lately, more Mosquitos are out. Mosquitos can carry viruses and parasites that can affect people and animals. There are ways you can protect yourself, like using insect repellent and reducing the time you spend outdoors during the most active times for mosquitos, which is dusk and dawn. More information is available at the following websites: https://www.epa.gov/mosquitocontrol  -OR- https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/index.html.

Roadrunner Public Health is contracted by Sandoval County to spray our Village weekly for Mosquitos on public roadways from April 1st through the end of September (weather permitting). Any questions or concerns should be directed to Sandoval County at 505-269-0372.

As an added reminder, you are required to wear a life jacket if you enter the river, it may help save your life and it is the law! Many people and canines have had to be rescued out of the river in the last couple of weeks. Many trees and debris are now in the river and are causing hazards. This is a very dangerous situation for everyone including our emergency personnel. Please take care and WEAR A LIFE JACKET!
