Mayor's Message for June 4th, 2021

Ditch and Trees

This week, the heavens opened up and delivered us hail! The temperatures are rising (it is June), but the mornings are wonderfully cool.

As the hailstorm proved, Corrales is heading into the monsoon season. If you live on a slope, please remember there are some things you need to do to control run-off waters. For complete details, please check out the information provided by Laurie Stout, Director of Planning and Zoning.  If you have questions, please reach out to Laurie at 505-897-0502, x219 or lstout [at] corrrales-nm.org.

Well, if it’s not water, it’s fire. Our green and tree-filled home is precious to us all, so be especially careful on hot, dry and windy days. Stay alert for to red flag warnings.

The Corrales Community Library is returning to its regularly scheduled hours starting Monday, June 7 (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 11-8; Tuesday and Friday 10-5, and Saturday 10-1). There will be room occupancy limits, mask wearing and social distancing, but the public is free to come into the library and browse.

The Governor is launching an incentive program to offer 10 million dollars in cash prizes for people who are vaccinated and who register for the lottery. To register for the cash sweepstakes, go to vax2themaxnm.org. Winners must show their CDC vaccination cards. Not yet vaccinated? Visit vaccinenm.org. As we get vaccinated and return to our lives, we are all winners. Thank you to Tanya Lattin and all the volunteers that have made our vaccination clinics so successful. Now that the recreation center is open, the dates and times may be different, but Commander Lattin will still see that you can get vaccinated.

The Corrales Road (448) scarification project is due to start on Tuesday, June 8. The project is expected to take 5 weeks, although the contractor says it may be finished earlier. Work will start at the south end of town and move north, matching up both lanes as it proceeds. Work will generally take place 9-5, Monday through Friday. One lane will always remain open and there will be a traffic control team to manage flow. Please be prepared to take alternative routes and remain patient; in just a few weeks, the project should be completed and we will have an improved roadway. Thank you so much for being Corrales-cool about it all.

This weekend, get out there and have some fun. It is due to be hot, with a chance for thunderstorms, but that shouldn’t keep you from visiting our local businesses. Don’t forget the Corrales Growers’ Market on Sunday, from 9-12 – more fresh produce available every week!

Whatever you do, please enjoy a little more turquoise freedom, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
