Mayor's Message for March 11th, 2022

Ribbon cutting

February and March may have switched places. Windy days are normal for March; but snow now, after so many sunny February days, comes as a bit of a surprise. Our weather is never dull, so continue to be prepared for sun, wind and snow.

Daylight Savings starts Sunday, March 13th. Set your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday night or risk being an hour late for everything on Sunday. Did you know the first real use of daylight savings was in WWI,  when the Germans used it to preserve fuel? For more history, see: https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nc/charlotte/weather/2021/02/24/why-daylight-saving-time-.

St.Patrick’s Day is Thursday, March 17th. Many celebrate by wearing green, eating corned beef and cabbage or having an Irish libation. It’s unknown whether St. Patrick was an actual person, but worldwide celebrations in his honor certainly are. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick's_Day

Many folks joined the ribbon-cutting for Thompson Fence Line Trail Connection. It was a beautiful morning and the crowd included local people, elected officials (state and local), and members of the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Commission. Many thanks to all who worked for 20 years on this project and to surrounding neighbors for their input and cooperation.

Construction has begun on the bridge at Loma Larga and West Ella Drive. Check out some pictures of the project at the end of this message. Public Works Director Michael Chavez hopes to have the bridge open for traffic by the end of next week. Thank you to Michael and his entire crew!

Music in Corrales is back to in-person concerts at the Old Church. Next up are TAKE3 (classical and jazz fusion trio on March 20th at 3 pm) and Hot Club of Cowtown. For more information about the complete line-up, and to purchase tickets, go to: https://www.musicincorrales.org/.

Corrales Historical Society Speaker Series presents former New Mexico Senator Dede Feldman’s overview of the New Mexico State Legislature, “The Best Little Chorizo Factory in New Mexico” at the Historic Old San Ysidro Church on March 27th at 2 pm. FREE.

Corrales Arts Center's "Exploring Artful Places" invites the community to explore Hispanic art, history and cuisine Friday, March 25th at 10 am with a tour of the Torreón at the National Hispanic Cultural Center with artist Federico Vigil. Tickets for this event can be purchased at corralesartscenter.org.

The Village thanks local Master Gardeners for their continued work on the Children’s Garden, located on the south side of the Corrales Community Library in La Entrada Park.

Ideum is a fascinating multi-field innovator based right here in Corrales. Learn more about their summer internships, software platforms, the digital docents they created for Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge, and their interactive museum art displays. https://ideum.com/news

This weekend should bring a sunny Saturday in the high 50’s and a partially cloudy Sunday in the 60’s. Good for getting out and doing whatever strikes you. Despite heavy winds last Sunday, almost 700 folks visited the Corrales Growers’ Market (next Market on April 3rd). Whatever you choose to do, please enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake
