Mayor's Message for March 12th, 2021

Corrales POD

Spring winds and dry conditions bring us red flag warning days. Clean up dry leaf matter and observe “no burn” days. Please keep Corrales fire free. For more information, go to the Corrales Fire Department page.

It’s Daylight Savings Time (2am March 14). Set your clocks one hour ahead on Saturday night. Then wonder why Sunday goes by so fast. Be especially careful in the days following the time change, because they seem to bring an increase in accidents and health problems, but oddly, also a reduction in crime. The good news is that DST really means spring is almost here. Bring it on!

Wednesday, March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. The origins of St. Patrick have become a bit murky, but the holiday is a global celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing and a whole lot of green. This year may be a bit short on parades and public dancing, but put on your green, eat some corned beef and cabbage and perhaps have an Irish libation.

Americans have been living with the pandemic for a year. It has been rough, but we have proven to be resilient and strong. Sandoval County is still in the YELLOW but green must be coming soon. Please continue to wear a mask and observe social distancing. New CDC guidelines (not yet adopted by the state) also show that fully vaccinated people can look forward to being able to interact more freely. Let’s believe we are really on the road to reopening.

The Albuquerque Historical Society and The Historical Society of NM have jointly published “March 2021 On-Line & In-Person New Mexico History & Culture Opportunities.” Thanks go to Debbie Clemente of the Corrales Historical Society for sharing this exhaustive list of things to learn, see and do!

Big news at Corrales Community Library! Starting March 16, you will be able to book a 30-minute, in person visit to the library on Tuesday from 4-7 and Saturdays from 12-5. Sign up . Capacity is limited by the PHO to 4, safety protocols will be followed, and you will need to bring your library card. For a full explanation and lots of other fun items, please read through the March Library Newsletter.  In more good library news, FOCL has a new and improved website created and donated by FOCL Board Member Kristie Gilbert. Give it a look and consider joining FOCL they do so much for the Corrales Community Library.

Corrales Mainstreet and Kiwanis are bringing you free daffodils on Friday, March 19 from 1-6 at the Corrales Growers’ Market parking lot. You’ll be able to safely drive-through to pick up your bunch. Donations are welcome and will support the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation.

Weather this weekend may be tricky, so get outside while you can. Sunday is a big day – not only the scheduling for March Madness but also the GRAMMYs. Whatever you do, don’t forget to change your clocks, stay safe  and enjoy yourself, Corrales-style.
