Mayor's Message for March 20th, 2020

Picture of Fixing La Entrada Park

First, THANK YOU for being the people and the community that you are. In this time of emergency, food donations are coming into the Fire Department, neighbors are helping each other and we are taking care of ourselves to keep others well.

This week has brought many new developments. Here in town, the Village Offices, Library, Senior Center, Recreation Center and Parks (including the soccer fields and the fish pond) are closed. However, our Village Administration workers can provide essential services telephonically or via email. Emergency and maintenance services continue at full strength.

We are posting health updates on the Village website and including links to other sites. This is the BEST place to find local government information: at website Corrales MainStreet and its Executive Director, Sandy Rasmussen are working closely with our businesses: go to visitcorrales.com for details on who’s open and what services they are still providing. For example, many of our restaurants are providing food pick-up or delivery. Go for it! We must help our businesses make it through this rough time so they’ll be ok when we get to the other side of this emergency. They have stuck by us in Corrales; let’s stick by them as much as we can in the upcoming weeks.

Here’s some good news. First, thanks to Public Works, those large piles of crusher fine in front of the soccer fields have been spread throughout the Corrales Growers’ Market area, providing a much improved surface for when the Growers’ Market reopens. Won’t that be a great Sunday? Also, making lemonade out of lemons, Lynn Siverts is taking this time of park closure to reseed and compost La Entrada Park. The park is going to look beautiful! Thanks Parks and Rec and a big shout out to the citizens who donated dirt and compost for the project.

While we wait for the Growers’ Market to reopen and the new seeds to sprout, we do need to take care of ourselves. These are trying times. Sure, we have to be realistic and prepared, but if watching social media or the news is making you anxious, please trade it for deep breathing, listening to music or taking a walk. Really, if you are keeping safe social distances, staying at home, washing your hands, cleaning surfaces and not coughing on anyone, you are doing what you can.

It’s also important to stay in touch with other people: reach out by calling folks often, especially if they live alone. Try a face to face using your phone or computer (Skype, Zoom, FaceTime, Duo). There are all kind of virtual tours out there, including free virtual tours of museums. You and a friend could schedule a time to “explore” a museum together while in your respective homes. Don’t know how to use any of these apps? Never fear: Brynn Cole at the Library wants to help you - remotely! Reach out to Brynn for help at brynn [at] corraleslibrary.org; the Corrales Community Library Facebook page or the Corrales Community Library website:While you’re at it, you can learn how to borrow an ebook…

Aggressive steps have been taken to safeguard us and to slow the spread of this virus. We are going to get through this, together. We are a spectacular community. Let’s get this done, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
