Mayor's Message for May 13th, 2022

Corrales siphon

It’s Friday the 13th. More than 60 million people worldwide have a phobia of Friday the 13th to varying degrees. The fear of Friday the 13th is officially called friggatriskaidekaphobia.  You can read more about why Friday the 13th is considered unlucky here: https://www.almanac.com/why-friday-13th-unlucky-origin-friday-13th.

While not all of us may have a fear of Friday the 13th, the fear of fire is very real for us, as they seem to be burning everywhere here in New Mexico right now. We must stay vigilant and careful with our outdoor spaces, both public and private. The air is dry, the ground is dry, and most of our plants and trees are stressed. Keep the space around your home as clean as you can. Village clean-up day is scheduled for June 11, 2022, so you’ll be able to bring your green waste to the public works department for disposal. Don’t burn leaves, trash, or grass, as burning is still banned in the county. The winds are forecast to be here for a few more days https://weather.com/weather/monthly/l/8c00ac701cc2c62fc2af3e9f57530f516ee41412391c49117de3c44baa1038d6

The on-going fires around the state are a good reminder to learn about the Ready, Set, Go! Program, and you can download the guide. The Ready phase should be implemented now, before a major event is threatening our area: make plans for an evacuation, identify needed items such as important papers, jewelry, computers, check book, ATM cards, credit cards, trust agreements, etc. that can be gathered and packed in an hour. Think of the things that can’t be replaced. The Set phase is when an emergency such as a fire is occurring, and evacuation could be called at any time. The Go phase is when it is time to evacuate. Remember, there are no set evacuation routes designated for the village. Evacuation routes are determined at the time of an emergency based on the specifics of the situation. Register for Code Red to be alerted by phone, text, or email in the event of an emergency. You can find more information on how to prepare for a fire emergency on the Village website.

Water is a precious resource, and we all need to make sure we are utilizing it effectively. You can find some great tips for watering plants here: https://www.gardeners.com/how-to/top-watering-myths/7688.html. We will have more information regarding water for irrigation in the coming weeks from the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District.

The warmer weather means more people are out walking throughout the Village with their pets. Please remember we do have a leash law. Our Village ordinances state: “small pets such as dogs may be walked in the parks and recreation facilities, but they must be leashed at all times and the owner is responsible for any necessary clean up.” There are doggie waste stations in many popular locations around the Village, so please make sure to take advantage of those while walking pets.

There may have been an uptick in coyote activity in the Village because of the drought, lack of water, and perhaps, less prey. The village has a Coyote Management Plan on the website that gives some helpful hints if you cross paths with a coyote. Animal Services is proactive with coyote management as well. They recently destroyed a coyote den here in the village to encourage the critters to move to another area.
