Mayor's Message for May 1st, 2020

book title arrangement

It’s May Day. The weather is beautiful but hot, so if you're outside, be sure to take plenty of water with you. With the heat and winds, there’s increased fire danger, so take care. If you have questions, please reach out to the Corrales Fire Department.

Around town, work continues on The Old Firehouse. Slated to be completed in July, the refurbished building will house Planning and Zoning and Animal Services. Also, the Corrales Community Library is sporting a new and improved pedestrian entrance for easier access and an end to the flooding that always occurred with the old one. Finally, the impressive Salce Basin flood improvement project is very close to being done. The engineers have been very impressed with local oversight.

Master Gardeners’ update: while the Master Gardeners may not be out in plain sight, we can be reached for gardening advice. Our website is: sandovalmastergardeners.org. Gardening questions can be emailed to: emailhelpline [at] sandovalmastergardeners.org or give us a call at (505) 907-1353. They know we’re all out in our gardens!

The Intel East Slope improvements have been completed and the trail is now open, giving us another beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors. The Village thanks Intel, and in particular Erica Edgerly, for her commitment to this project to not only preserve the trail but also increase residents’ protection against flooding during the monsoon season.

Save the Date! Because of COVID19, many high school seniors aren’t enjoying award ceremonies, proms or parties. So, with input from citizens, the Village is going to throw them a PARADE on May 23rd at 10 a.m. Graduating seniors will be driving down the parade route in decorated cars, while we sit at safe distances on the side of the route and cheer them on. Let’s celebrate this big milestone in their lives. Watch for more information in the Corrales Comment and on the Village website. Get the word out to those who have (or know) a graduate. For more information, please contact Lynn Siverts at lsiverts [at] corrales-nm.org.

I’m honored to have been unanimously elected to be District 8 Director for the New Mexico Municipal League. The Municipal League is our foremost ally, lobbyist and advocate and it is crucial that local voices be heard as the State moves into a special session. It’s an opportunity to be more in the know and I’ll work hard to bring our concerns to the leadership.

We are entering a new era in our fight against COVID-19. Starting today, we are in the Preparation Phase. Good news: non-essential businesses can do curbside pick-up and delivery, you can play golf or get vet and pet grooming services. Harder news: from now until May 15 is a test for each and every one of us. If we do not adhere strictly to COVID safe practices - if we flunk this test - we will not be able to move onto Phase 1 and more openness.

How do we get from Preparation Phase to Phase 1?  Follow the rules. Please check the red banner on the Village website for the latest updates from the State. We are too smart to get caught in a cycle of re-infection and closures. We will show that we care enough for each other to control our own actions and keep others safe. We must do it together and for each other.

The drive-through Corrales Growers’ Market is Sunday from 9 to 12. Many thanks to Bonnie and Al  Gonzales and Village employees Lynn Siverts and Tanya Lattin for the many hours they have collaborated to deliver food to you as safely as possible. Whatever you do, please enjoy yourselves and stay safe and well, Corrales-style.
