Mayor's Message for May 20th, 2022

Rec Center Pool

The Corrales pool opens May 28th at 12:30 PM! Summer is coming! School is almost over. While at the pool, remember to use your sunscreen to protect your skin. Be safe and listen to the life guards.

Early voting will begin May 21st in Corrales at the Community Center from 10 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday.  The voting location will be closed in observance of Memorial day on Monday, May 30th. Voting is our duty as citizens.

The Corrales Garden Tour is June 5, 2022 from 9AM to 4 PM, tickets are $15.00. corrales-gardentour.com/

Cleanup in the village is planned for June 11, 2022. Clean up around the house so there is a buffer from any potential fire. Trim the shrubs and dry grass. Do not burn. Take it to the village at the rec center for disposal – hours to be announced soon.

Take advantage of our Growers’ Market, while there is produce.  The Market is every Sunday beginning at 9 AM. We don’t know what the summer will be like for our growers. We only know there isn’t much water at present.

Note From the Farmers’ Market Pros:

It's not just the fresh, delicious food, or the open air, or the importance of supporting local producers. What makes farmers markets so special is the people. Building relationships between farmers and the people who eat what they grow is important work. Some days that's a joyful endeavor and some days it's harder than others. Because the funny thing about farmers markets is that they're full of actual humans trying their best to make it through the day.

As the market is setting up, the manager might have a sick child at home. Farmers are dealing with ever more unpredictable weather, and maybe a parent with health issues. A fender bender en-route may have ruined half the baker's product just as kitchen rent is due. So when a manager tosses a tense reminder about being on time, and a food maker responds with a few choice words, what comes next may not be about market rules at all.

Remembering that everyone has a lot going on helps when it's time to LEAF: Listen, Empathize, Acknowledge (or Apologize) and Fix the issues. Small farmers and business owners are often under financial pressure. Farmers market managers typically are caught between serving boards and bosses, regulatory agencies, neighbors, and farmers and vendors who each have their own priorities. All of us are dealing with the world's stresses.

Extend each other a little grace and remember not to take things personally. Shake it off and try again. Whatever we're dealing with outside the market, here we're all after the same things. Providing fresh food, keeping local businesses strong and farmers farming and building communities is important. Caring for our people is where it all starts. Let's grow
