Mayor's Message for May 21st, 2021

Rose Garden at La Entrada Park

We got some lovely spring rain this week. Now it is weather in the 80s as we head towards the unofficial start of summer next weekend. Summer 2021 looks to be a big improvement over last year.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) decided to repave its road, NM State 448 (Corrales Road). Work will begin early June and is slated to last a couple of months. The Village is urging DOT to make sure the contractor works quickly and creates a traffic plan that allows our residents to access our homes and businesses. We hope to get more information out before construction starts.

The 2021 Corrales Community Grant Program, sponsored by Intel Corporation in cooperation with Corrales MainStreet, has extended the deadline for applications until June 30. Grants should focus on Education, Empowering Girls and Women, the Environment, and Quality of Life. Entries will be judged on the impact of the project/program on Corrales citizens; sustainability of the project/program; clear and measurable goals and objectives; creativity, and appropriate budget with specific equipment costs.  A total of $8,000 will be split between grantees and should be spent by December 31, 2021. Check out the application at https://visitcorrales.com/. Submit questions and completed applications to visitcorrales [at] gmail.com.

Planning and Zoning received 189 responses to the Casita survey. See what your neighbors had to say at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/results/SM-9L3YBD6L9/. P&Z will develop ways to share and review the results with the community.

New Mexico is ahead of schedule in achieving a 60% statewide vaccination rate (53% right now). If you are fully vaccinated, you do not need to wear a mask except in businesses that require them. If you are unvaccinated, you are 10 times more likely to get the new variants of COVID-19, so please protect yourself by continuing to wear a mask until you can get your shots (https://cvvaccine.nmhealth.org/).

National Search and Rescue (SAR) Week is May 16th - May 30th.  A local family is launching a 501c (3) “Dave Gives Back” campaign to support the heroic efforts of SAR. Sadly, the family became aware of SAR’s amazing work through the tragic loss of a family member who never returned from a wilderness hike. Their goal is to turn this loss into increased awareness and support for the hard-working and often overlooked Search and Rescue responders. Gardening with the Masters Online presents “Bosque Tree Health” with Matt Peterson, ABQ Botanic Garden and Heritage Farm Manager, who will talk about the health of our Rio Grande Bosque Trees, the effects of drought on tree health and the steps land management agencies take to manage invasive species, restore habitats and support the silvery minnow and SW Willow flycatcher. May 26 at 2 pm. Registration required at http://sandovalmastergardeners.org/gardening-classes/gardening-with-the-masters-online/

Corrales Cleanup Day is Saturday May 22 from 8am-12pm at Corrales Public Works at 4105 Corrales Road (enter from 500 Jones Road). Dispose of household discards, green waste and appliances (except refrigerators or televisions). Sorry, no tires, hazardous or commercial waste. Thank you, Public Works!

After you dispose of those unwanted items, reward yourself with a virtual concert by the chamber group Telegraph Quartet. There will be a live Q&A session for quartet members on May 22nd at 7:30 pm. For tickets and details, go to https://www.musicincorrales.org/concert/telegraph-quartet/#tribe-tickets.

Dr. Ward Minge passed away last week at the age of 97. He and his wife Shirley were the originators of the Casa San Ysidro Museum and contributed so much to the community of Corrales. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/abqjournal/obituary.aspx?n=ward-alan-minge&pid=198672220&fhid=20473

Supposed to be cloudy this weekend. Nothing to keep you from enjoying our trails, recreational facilities and local businesses. This Sunday, check out the Corrales Growers’ Market from 9-12. Whatever you do, please enjoy your weekend, Corrales-style.

Mayor of Corrales
