Mayor's Message for May 22nd, 2020

Reopening Readiness Map

Weather is still tending to be hot and dry, although our mornings are blissfully cool. We have intermittent strong winds, so red flag warnings are common. This means high fire danger and no burning.  Please help avoid any chance of fire and allow our CFD Chief Martinez to rest a little easier.

Memorial Day is coming up on Monday. We honor the American service men and women who have died while serving our country, following a tradition that dates back centuries. This year we won’t have parades or red poppies, but we can still take a moment to reflect on the idea of sacrifice for the common good. These fallen heroes thought our society was important enough to give it everything they had. I do not think they would mind our considering what positive sacrifice means for us today in the midst of this crisis.

Council Meeting zooms next Tuesday at 6:30. Look for the Agenda and public packet materials this afternoon. Or look on the Calendar  We are still meeting via teleconference, so look for the call-in number near the top of the Agenda or click View Details on the meeting. Also, if you have a citizen comment, please mail it to agjullin [at] corrales-nm.org by Tuesday at noon, so it can be read into the record at the Council Meeting.

PARADES!

This morning there was a celebratory parade for the graduates of the Corrales Elementary School. Congratulations to you all!

Tomorrow morning at 10, it’s time for Corrales Graduates 2020, a parade to celebrate graduating high school seniors living in Corrales. Watch from your car along the Parade Route, which starts at Corrales Recreation Center, turns right onto Corrales Road, right onto Coronado Road, right onto Loma Larga, right onto West Ella and ends at Corrales Road. Let’s make some noise for our graduates, shall we?

Do you feel you are in the midst of a science-fiction movie. battling an alien invasion of moths? See entomologist Jason Schaller at https://www.kob.com/new-mexico-news/new-mexico-faces-moth-invasion/5727…. They hide during the day, so check for holes in your window and door screens and turn off outdoor lights near entry ways. Good news - they will go away as it gets hotter and drier.

We keep adding new items to the Village website. Click on Latest News to see annual budgets back to 2013 or the Community Photo Gallery where your photos of life in the Village will be posted. Have some you want to share? Please send to agjullin [at] corrales-nm.org.

We love our Bosque and more people are using it. Unfortunately, there is also an increase in trash. We don’t have an “Open Space” crew whose job it is to pick up trash. It’s everyone’s  responsibility to keep the Bosque trash-free and it is especially important now. Please pack out your trash and show your kids how to do the same. There are trash bins at each Bosque entrance. Kudos to those who pick up trash now and to Road Runner Waste who will making an extra pick-up at high use entrances. The Bosque is our jewel; let’s keep her that way.

Look at us! New Mexico was the only state in the nation to meet the safety criteria for opening up. Check out our green state on the map under COVID 19 Resources the top of the website homepage. New Mexico also has the highest testing rate in our region. Anybody have the right kind of swabs? The New Mexico Department of Health would love to hear from you so they can increase their testing numbers. The Governor says we are track to open up more fully on June 1, which is only a week away. My hope is that we will soon be able to venture back out into our world. We just need to follow a few simple rules: wash our hands, maintain social distance and wear a mask. I’m ready to do this and I know you are too.

This weekend we’ll be having the drive-through Corrales Growers Market Sunday from 9-12. There’s a slight chance for rain on Sunday and Monday, but not enough to dampen traditional barbeques. Whatever you do, relax and be hopeful for the possibilities that are right around the corner, especially if we stay the course. We are going to do this, Corrales-style.
