Mayor's Message for May 27th, 2022

Flags at half-mast

This weekend we celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is an American holiday honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U. S. Military.

It was originally known as Decoration Day for more than a century, originating in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Each year on Memorial Day, a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 PM local time. Wearing a red poppy on Memorial Day began with a WW1 poem, “In Flanders Field.”

Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, hold family gatherings, or participate in parades. Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season. Despite the increasing celebration of the holiday as a summer rite of passage, there are some formal rituals still practiced. The American Flag should be hung at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day, then raised to the top of the staff.

In the beginning, Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it was originally known, was held on May 30. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and declared it a federal holiday.

The Village offices will be closed Monday, May 30th  in observance of Memorial Day. Voting at the community center will also be closed on Monday.

Enjoy your Memorial Day but remember and honor our past and those who sacrificed to make our futures possible.

Water for irrigation has been on everyone’s mind lately. We are still in drought conditions, have a large water debt to Texas, and the Corrales Siphon is damaged and isn’t working at capacity.  The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District has sent out information regarding the water issues that can be read here: https://www.mrgcd.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Season-Outlook-Corrale… .

Covid cases are on the rise again this week. The Village administration is encouraging people visiting our facilities to go back to wearing masks. Corrales has a unique population, 33.3% of the population is 65 or older (which is roughly 2876 people). We know people 65 and over and people with certain medical conditions are predisposed to increased risk of severe COVID and death.  Here are some key points to remember:
