Mayor's Message for May 5th, 2023

photo of garden vegetables

We can start planting most seasonal vegetables now, maybe a few could wait like okra and zucchini. Some old farmers say wait until after the 4th of July for zucchini, let someone else deal with the squash bugs. They do seem to hit the early plantings hard. I really do miss those fresh home-grown tomatoes. Their flavor is so distinctive when compared to the off-season varieties we see in the grocery stores.

This weekend is the Village of Corrales' FREE spring clean-up of green waste and household trash. This is a great opportunity to get rid of dead brush and leaves on your property while reducing the risk of fire in our community. Follow the signs to 500 Jones Road on Saturday from 8am-12pm.

There is going to be another presentation to the Village Council on 5/23/2023 on an alternative plan for renovation of the administration’s parking lot. Perhaps you would like to zoom in to see the presentation of another way to design a parking lot. The problem is there may be less parking on the administration’s campus. The administration continues to look for ways to provide safer parking in the business and administrative areas.

With this good weather everyone should be out and about participating in the activities going on in the Village. Go to the Village website and search the events calendar. There is a lot to do this weekend throughout the Village with great events like Cinco de Mayo, the Growers’ Market, the Corrales Arts Studio Tour, the Bike and Wine Tour and First Sunday Arts in the Village, make a plan, invite your friends and have some fun!

In addition to Cinco de Mayo, May 5th is also “Cartoonist Day” and for you Star Wars fans “Revenge of the Fifth Day” and May 6th is “National Tourist Appreciation Day”, “International No Diet Day”, “No Homework Day” and “National Beverage Day”. CRIME & SAFETY UPDATE:

Shortly after 6:00AM on Monday 4/24, police were called regarding an unwanted subject who had returned to a residence on West Valverde Road from which she had been issued a Trespass warning. The 34-year-old Rio Rancho woman was arrested for Trespassing and Resisting or Obstructing an Officer.

On Friday 4/28, two citizens reported cases of Identity Theft, one involving the filing of a fraudulent tax return and the other pertaining to unauthorized accounts. Neither complainant knew how, when or where their data had been compromised. Remember to safeguard your personal and financial information both on paper and online, and review the helpful information concerning Identity Theft at this link:

https://www.justice.gov/criminal-fraud/identity-theft/identity-theft-and-identity-fraud

One of the alleged Identity Theft victims also reported that he is unable to account for four firearms, which may have been taken from his former place of residence on the 900 block of W. La Entrada DR at an unknown time between July 2022 and April 2023. Always properly secure firearms so that they don’t end up in the wrong hands.

If you’re celebrating Cinco De Mayo this Friday, please do so responsibly and don’t drink and drive or let someone you care about do so. - SEE IT, HEAR IT, REPORT IT!
