Mayor's Message for May 8th, 2020

Safest City in New Mexico Banner

Feels a lot like June right now. It has been very hot, along with high pollen levels and unsafe UV light levels. Please take care of yourselves.

Need a little good news? Corrales, for the third straight year in a row, has been named the Safest City in New Mexico. Kudos to all of you citizens and to the Corrales Police Department. It’s a joint effort that takes each of us and all of us. We know how to stay safe.

Speaking of which, we all want to reopen, right? May 15 is tantalizingly close, but data is showing we are missing the mark. Staying away from each other is the ONLY thing that slows the spread. The rules are simple: limit trips, wear a mask when out, observe social distancing and use sanitizers. This is what personal responsibility looks like. You have the power and the outcome rests completely in your hands. If we stay the course each of our individual actions will mean that together we get to the next phase.

Don’t have a mask? No worries, Matthew Mcconaughy, aka Bobby Bandito, has just the video for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I18Q_48ODBQ

We are very lucky to be able to walk and cycle our pathways, trails and Bosque. However, Animal Services has seen a big spike in dog bites due to unleashed animals. Clearly dog bites are no joke. From now on, anyone seen with a dog off leash will be cited. No exceptions.

VOTE! June 2 is the primary election. You still have time to request an absentee ballot at nmvote.org. Early voting begins here in the Village at the Community Center on May 16. If you have questions, call 505-827-3600 or visit sos.elections [at] state.nm.us

New Mexico is always undercounted in the Census. 2020 is no exception. An undercount costs us hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Please take a few minutes to be counted at: 2020census.gov.

Thanks to the joint efforts of State Forestry and the Village of Corrales, wood from the Bosque (obtained through past thinning projects), is being picked up and delivered to the Navajo Nation. This wood is sorely needed for cooking fuel.

The Village Council meets next Tuesday at 6:30. The Agenda and Public Packet will be available this afternoon, along with phone-in instructions for members of the public. Public comment mailed to shannon.fresquez [at] corrales-nm.org by noon on Tuesday will be read into the record.

Don’t forget the Grad Parade on May 23 at 10 am. Thanks to the generosity of Kiwanis, our grads will also get a little bling: a commemorative tee-shirt. Check the Village website for details.

Sunday is Mother’s Day and a time to celebrate those who are with us and those far away. It’s also a great day to pick up fresh produce at the (drive-through) Growers' Market, from 9-12. We might get some rain this weekend but It’s going to be hot.  Whatever you do, stay cool, safe and sane. We can do this, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
