Mayor's Message for November 10th, 2023

Thank you Veterans

Tomorrow, November 11th, is Veterans Day. Originally known as Armistice Day, this day is to honor our military veterans who have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Veterans day should not be confused with Memorial Day, which honors those who died while in military service. We would like to thank all Corraleños who served our country. If you haven’t been in to see the display honoring these citizens in the lobby of our administration building, you have until December 4th to do so. Letters of thanks to active service members through “Operation Gratitude” will be accepted until December 8th – just drop off letters (not in an envelope) to the box in the lobby. If you need more information on the program, please email Deputy Clerk Skye DeVivi at sdevivi [at] corrales-nm.org. Village offices and the Corrales Library will be closed today in observance of the holiday.

Last Saturday’s fall clean-up day was a huge success (see photo below). 147 loads of trash were hauled away during the event. Public Works Director Michael Chavez sends a big shout-out of thanks to the Corralitos 4-H group, as well as to Corrales Fire Department and Planning and Zoning staff who helped out. If you missed this one, don’t worry: the Village hosts these events twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. We will be sure to announce when the next one is scheduled.

The holiday season is approaching fast. The kickoff event for holiday festivities will be the Christmas de los Caballos parade. This parade had been an annual event kicking off the food and toy drive for the Corrales Fire Department’s Giving Tree, until covid derailed it for a few years. This year is the first year post-covid, so make sure to turn out to see this all-equine parade on Sunday, November 19th at 1:00 pm. The parade runs along Corrales Road from Wagner Farms and ends at Top Form Arena, near the Rec Center. Donations of food and toys will be collected along the parade route.

Other holiday events to mark your calendar for include (more info coming soon!):

  • Grower’s Market Holiday Market November 19 from 11 AM – 12 PM
  • Small business Saturday, November 25– this is a New Mexico tax holiday. Various businesses in Corrales will be offering discounts and prizes.
  • Holiday Tree Lighting event, November 25 at the administration complex
  • The Giving Tree will go up in the lobby of the administration building by December 1

Thank you to all Corraleños who turned out to vote, both during early voting and on election day this past Tuesday. All three bond questions passed: $1 million for Fire Department funding for fire station 3, $1 million for road and drainage improvements, and $2 million for farmland preservation easements and purchase of land to maintain open space. Just as a reminder, elections for our Mayor, Judge, Village Councilor and bond questions will now be held in November of odd numbered years.

Nearly 1,000 Corraleños have taken the Village survey – are you one of them? If not, you can pick up a paper copy of the survey from the Village administration lobby or the library. You can also take the survey online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GGP3FR7. Every resident of the Village 16 and older can take the survey. The survey closes at 11:45 pm on November 27th. Don’t wait – take the survey today!

Do you want to receive the Mayor’s Message directly to your inbox every Friday? Email Village Clerk, Melanie Romero, at mromero [at] corrales-nm.org, or give her a call at 505-897-0502. She will add your email address to the distribution list. She is also available to answer questions about the Village survey, committee meetings and projects, or just general questions about the Village.

We are all neighbors here in the Village and we should look out for each other. Be safe, stay healthy, and look both ways when crossing the street. Don’t forget to obey the speed limit to protect other drivers, pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists.
