Veterans Day is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars, and Veterans Day 2022 will occur on Friday, November 11. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.”

Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

In 1954, after lobbying efforts by veteransservice organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday, striking the word Armistice” in favor of Veterans.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954. From then on, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Signing Anderson Property Purchase Agreement

This past Wednesday, the Village Administrator, Ron Curry, signed a purchase agreement for the Village to buy property from Michael Anderson, son of balloonist Maxie Anderson. The property is located north of the post office on Corrales Road. Stay tuned for more information on what this property could be used for in the future.  The Village will also be closing on the purchase of the Gonzales property this month, which means the Parks and Recreation Commission will soon be able to start looking into plans for that area as well.

Covid Update

Fire Commander Tanya Lattin has a Covid update that she says is unfortunately a bit "doom and gloom,“ but the information needs to be shared to keep our community healthy. The State has had a 63.8% increase in Covid cases in recent days.  The 7 days ending 10/25/22 had 2492 lab cases, then  the 7 days ending 11/1/22 we were at 3086 and as of this past Tuesday it is 4082. Corrales is getting ONE lab case PER DAY.  This is an undercount, and we are seeing asymptomatic people test positive in the Village.   Based on treatment numbers, the actual cases are about 5 times more than the state reported cases.  A better determinate of cases is hospitalizations and treatment.  Hospitalizations are going up for covid and other respiratory illnesses.   There are still guidelines for staying home if you test positive. Even though there is no state mask mandate, protect yourself by wearing masks in crowded areas. Get tested if you are symptomatic, and get your vaccinations to stay healthy and safe. This virus does not seem to be going away. It is a problem that is improving as we learn how to fight it, but be aware that it is still out there.
